Harold P. Houston Harold P. Houston, a South Scranton resident, died Friday, December 29, 2006, in Mercy Hospice. He was the husband of the late Jeanne Argust Houston, who died Dec. 19, 1998. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late George J. and Agnes Williams Houston. He was a member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church. He was an Army veteran of WW11 serving with the Army Engineers in the campaigns of Algeria, French Morroco, Tunisia, Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars and Three Arrow Hearts and seven overseas stripes. He was employed by the Sunday Times and the Scranton Times for 53 years. At his retirement he was the district manager. He was a member of the 50 Year Club of The Scranton Times. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 948 and the Veterans Of Foreign Wars. Surviving are four sons Harold Houston Jr., Stow, Ohio, John Houston, Clifton, N. J., Jerry Houston, Lake Ariel, Pa. and David P.Houston, West Grove, Pa.. Also 7 grandchildren Christopher, Jennifer, Courtney, Kevin, Meghan, Maura and Rory and two greatgrandchildren Ainsley and Katelyn. Also two brothers George J. Rosemary L. Miller Rosemary L. Miller, a South Scranton resident, died Wednesday, December 13, 2006, in Mountain Rest Nursing Home. She was the widow of William C. Miller, Sr., who died May 27, 1972. Born in Scranton on October 27, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Amadeo (Benny) and Matilda Sartor DeStefano. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1933 and graduated from Lackawanna Business College in 1934. She was a lifelong member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church and was a member of the Catholic Golden Age. She was a retired employee of the Globe Store. She had been a fan of all CBS soap operas. Surviving is a son William C. Miller Jr., and wife Betty, Scranton, with whom she resided and a daughter Peggy Paroby and husband, Daniel, Scranton. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, four adopted grandchildren, one greatgranddaughter, nieces, nephews, greatnieces and greatnephews and cousins. She was preceeded in death by a brother Joesph M. DeStefano Sr., in 1996 and two sisters: Anna Louise DeStefano, who died in 1922 and Elizabeth M. Nagle, who died in 1993. He was an Army Veteran of WWll, serving in the Phillipines. He was known to many as " Uncle Mike", a man loved by his family, friends and neighbors. His love was doing kind deeds for those around him. His passing marks the end of an era of Rybniks which began on Water Ave. in lower South Side known as "The Flats", then migrating to First Street before moving to thier home on South Irving Ave. in 1963. A humble, gentle, hardworking man who enjoyed his family, he will be remembered forever in the hearts of his caregivers Nick, Theresa, Cory, Janel and Kendra Nidoh, along with many other nieces, nephews and greatnieces and greatnephews. He was the last of his generation preceeded in death by four brothers Joseph, John, Stanley and Chester as well as four sisters Helen Rybnik, Mary DeCresenza, Jean Nidoh and Eleanor "Babe" Ventura. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 AM in Sacred Hearts Church, South Scranton, by Rev. Scott Sterowski, Pastor. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph J. and Mary Bohn Snyder. She was a member of Sacred Hearts Church, South Scranton and was formerly employed as a seamstress by Gold Star Manufacturing. She enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews. Surviving
are nieces and nephews. She was also preceeded in death by a brother
Frank Snyder and four sisters Marie Kurchinski, Ann Kornetka, Teresa Dowling
and Rose Swingle. The funeral will be private and held at the convenience
of the family.
Frank J. Tolerico Frank J. Tolerico, formerly of Oakmont Gardens Apartments, died Thursday, November 23, 2006 at the Veterans Administration Nursing Home, Plains Twp. He was born January 27, 1916 in Carbondale, a son of the late Joseph and Lucille Boots Tolerico. He was the husband of the late Ann Remish who proceeded him in death on February 27,1995 and the couple was married for over 55 years. Frank attended Carbondale Area schools. He was a WWll Navy Veteran and sustained a head injury and was medically discharged. After leaving the Navy, he worked for Roller Bearings in New Jersey. He returned to Pennsylvania and worked for the D & L Railroad for many years as a cook. Later on he was a member of the Local Teamsters Union #229 until his retirement. He became a volunteer at Allied Services for the Handicapped on the Morgan Highway. He was one of the original members of the Peer Stroke Program at the age of 81, after suffering two strokes himself, and continued to counsel other stroke patients until he went to live at the VA Nursing Home in May 2006 due to failing health. During his tenure with the Peer Stroke Program, he attended many lectures and seminars at Allied Services and he also attended classes at Marywood University to further his knowledge on the needs of the disabled. Frank was a devoted Catholic and was a member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church. He and his best friend Vince attednded Mass at St. Peter's Cathedral on a daily basis. You could then see them, about town, visiting their friends at the Viewmont Mall, and then ending the day with a good meal at one of the area's restaurants. Frank was an avid Penn State and Notre Dame fan and his baseball team was the Boston Red Sox. Frank entered into eternal rest with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thanksgiving Day with his daughter Deb Ostrowski and husband Stan , Lewisburg, at his side. Also surviving is a son Frank Tolerico Jr. and wife Ann, Redlands, Ca., a sister Helen Hiebert and husband Emory, Mission Hills, Ca., two granddaughters Carol Gillespie, Redlands, Ca., and Jill Petroff, Seal Beach, Ca. and one grandson Frank Tolerico lll, East Highland, Ca.. He is also survived by eight greatgrandchildren: Frank Tolerico lV, Nicholas and Michael Tolerico, Joshua and Brigdet Gillespie, and Luke, Taylor Marie, and Jake Petroff. Born in Scranton, he was the son of Patricia Haen Ahern and stepson of Thomas Ahern, Scranton and son of Daniel P. Loftus and stepson of Barbara Samuel Loftus, Clarks Summit. Prior to his death he was a forklift operator at Panel Prints and a residential counselor with the Scranton Counseling Center. He was a graduate of North Pocono High School. He loved playing baseball as a youth and skiing as an adult where he was part of the ski instruction team at Montage Mountain. He also avidly followed his beloved New York Yankees, reveling in their victories and agonizing in their defeats. Richard A. Townend He was employed as a soil inspector for Pennsylvania Testing Laboratories for many years. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. While battling cancer for the last 13 years, he was a very loving husband, father, Poppi, and brother. He was always there for his family and friends. His interests and hobbies were collecting different and unique items. He was very smart, talented, funny and loving. He loved to hunt, fish and fly kites with his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, grandchildren. family, friends and all who knew him. Also surviving are two daughters Christina M. Edwards, Scranton and Ann Marie Williams, Old Forge and a son Brian A. Edwards, Scranton. Francis A. Scholl Francis A. Scholl, 86, a South Scranton resident, died Thursday, September 21, 2006 in VNA Hospice at CMC. Born in Scranton, he was a son of the late Joseph and Caroline Hillerman Scholl. He was a member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church. He was a retired employee of Weldron Co., NJ and was an Army Veteran of WWll. He loved music and all sports especially the Pittsburg Steelers and the Mets. He enjoyed deep sea fishing. He loved to bargain, always in search of a good deal. He was a loving uncle who will be deeply missed. Surviving are nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. Charles Thomas " Corky" Murphy
Jr Charles Thomas " Corky" Murphy Jr., 65, died Saturday, September 9, 2006, of natural causes at his home in Hollywood, Ca. Born in Scranton, he was a son of Marcella A. McGee Murphy, Scranton, and the late Charles. T. Murphy , Sr. who died in 1974. A star of stage, screen and television, he was a member of Actors Equity, the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. He was a member of The Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood and attended the University Of Scranton and Catholic University. Corky was proud of his life's career as a "working actor" who prior to a tragic and debilitating accident in 1982, was in demand for roles in the entertainment industry. A sampling of his talent can still be seen on TV reruns of "Barney Miller", "Sanford and Son", and "Laverne and Shirley" to name a few. Movie credits included "Nickelodeon", and Mel Brooks' "History Of The World, Part II", which also air occasionally. He performed on stage in roles on and off Broadway in New York, Los Angeles and other parts of the country including the Poconos and locally in Scranton Public Theatre productions of "The Odd Couple" and " A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum". His friends in the acting profession would easily constitute a cast of thousands. In addition to his loving and ever supportive mother, Corky is survived by sisters Mary Agnes Salley and husband Charles of Danvers , MA; Elaine Stahl and husband James; brothers Patrick and wife Mary Kay, Michael; and James and wife Sylvia, all of Scranton; 6 nieces and 3 nephews and numerous Aunts, Uncles and cousins who will all miss his treasured birthday phone calls. Corky stated in a 1989 Scranton Times article that a motto of his was a quote from St. Augustine which reads "Talent is a gift from God, performance is your gift to God". She and her late husband resided in Kentucky for 19 years before returning to the Moscow Area. She was devoted to her faith and her church. His wife is the former Veronica Lizak and the couple was married for 50 years. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late August and Margaret Nash Strasburger, Sr. He was educated in St.Mary Of The Assumption School and was a member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church. He was employed as a painting contractor and retired from the Chamberlain Corp. after 30 years of service in 1996. Our dad will be missed by all who knew him. He was a wonderful person and one can only dream of being like him. He would have done anything to help anyone. He was an avid hunter. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and doing for others. He was an active member of the Silver Sneakers program through Geisinger Health Plan and enjoyed his daily exercise with our mom. She loved swimming, dancing and going places with family and friends. She was a caring, sharing and loving person who will be greatly missed, especially by her children who took care of her for the past several years. Theresa was born in Scranton February 20, 1911, and has been a lifelong resident. She was the firstborn of 9 children to Joseph and Adella Piscione Bisignani who came to America from the province of Chieti, Italy. She was a member of St. Francis Of Assisi Church and it's Altar and Rosary Society. She managed to walk to Sunday Mass until she was in her 80's. Theresa was unable to complete her education at Central High School because she had to help her family. At age 16, she began working at McNeill's Pharmacy. She was always industrious and had a strong work ethic. She also was employed by The Globe Store, Scranton Talk, Daystrom and Bartikowski's. Her favorite pastimes were her family, attending family parties, baking and attending to her home. She possesed a wonderful sense of humor. Theresa was fondly called " Zizzi", by her nieces and nephews. Zizzi is a shortened Italian word for Zia or Aunt. Surviving is a devoted sister, Irene Wyandt, Scranton, 11 nieces and nephews including Frances Bordogna who was at Theresa's bedside when she was called to her Heavenly home. Also there are 21 Grandnieces and grandnephews and 3 great grand nieces and nephews. She was a graduate of North Pocono High School, class of 2004 where she was voted class sweatheart. She was an enthusiastic and devoted employee of Allied Services for the past three years. She enjoyed work, music, family, friends and day trips with her dad in his 18 wheeler. She was a loving daughter, sister, granddaughter and niece. She made family and friends appreciate love and life just by her smile and laughter. McDonald's fries and McNuggats were her favorite entree. She also enjoyed overnite stays in motels on trips. She was a recipient of the Make A Wish Foundation in 2002. Through the foundation, she and her family had a wonderful vacation in Disneyworld where her wish became a reality. secretary in the Attorney General's Office in Philadelphia where she met
her husband of 53 years, Frank Miller who preceeded her in death. Mrs.
Miller was a member of Daughters of The American Revolution; Harmony Chapter
# 58, Order Of The Eastern Star; Irem Temple Women's Auxiliary, and the

Following the War, Charles became a licensed Professional Engineer. He also was a Master Plumber. He was a retired employee of Gilboy and O'Malley Consulting Engineers. He was a member of American Society Plumbing Engineers. Among Charles's career accomplishments was contributing to the refurbishment of The Statue Of Liberty. He was a member of Hickory Street Presbyterian Church, Peter Williamson Lodge # 323, F. and A. Masons, Keystone Consistry, Irem Temple and the Shrine Club. Also surviving are two daughters: Carol Cron, Dunmore, and Karen Nindorf, Candlewood Lake, Ct., and two sons: Charles Marshall Brown, Scranton , and Kieth Kizer, Guilderland, NY. and 10 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren and one nephew. 2006 in Scranton. Her husband of thirty-nine years, Joseph F. Connolly
preceeded her in death in 1985. Born in Scranton June 23, 1917, she was
a daughter of the late William and Agnes Reilly Gallagher. She had resided
in Clarks Summit for the past twenty-three years and was formerly a resident
of South Scranton. She was a member of St. Gregory's Parish, Clarks Green,
and formerly was a member of St. John The Evangelist Parish and was a past
president of it's Altar and Rosary Society. She also was a former member
of Nativity Of Our Lord Church. Prior to retirement, she had been employed
at Harper and Row Publishing Company. She also served as a volunteer at
Mercy Hospital and was involved in the Mother's Club at South Catholic
High School. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, class
of 1935. The lives of those who knew Mary were deeply enriched by her love,
grace, compassion, strength and wit. She will be fondly remembered and

M. Winters, 72, a Scranton resident, died Thursday, February 23, 2006 in
Mercy Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer. He and his wife, the
former Joan Sporer, would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary
on July 21st. Born in Scranton, he was a son of the late Frank and Mary
Andrews Winters. He was a member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Church and
was a 1951 graduate of St. Mary's High School. He was a Navy Veteran of
the Korean War who served proudly on the U.S.S. Baltimore. Frank was active
for many years in the Boy Scouts and served as a district commissioner.
He personally attained the rank of Eagle Scout and was especially proud
to award his two sons and grandson with their Eagle Scout awards. Frank
was a skilled electrician by trade and retired after 23 years of service
with the Scranton State Office Building. He was a loving husband, father,
son grandfather, brother and uncle. He will be sadly missed by his family
and friends. Also surviving are four children, Robert, Kathy Terry and
husband James; Frank and wife Christine; Jackie Munley and husband Michael.
He also had 6 grandchildren, a brother, Carl and wife Karen, Albany NY.,

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a plumber by the Bronx Veteran's Administration Hospital. He was a World War Two Army combat veteran serving in North Africa and Italy. During his many years in New York, he co-founded the first little league on the lower East Side, attained champion caliber as a handball player and participated in numerous athletic and civic organizations including roles in neighborhood and tenant organizations. A devoted Catholic, he was a member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Church and participated in church organizations throughout his life including the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Nocturnal Adoration Society, Catholic Youth Organization and the Legion Of Mary. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed. Hospital. She was the widow of Frank Doherty and was preceeded in death
by her first husband, John Wright. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter
of the late Max and Magdelena Matthias Ludwig. She was a member of St.
Mary Of The Assumption Church and it's Altar and Rosary Society. She was
one of the founding members of the South Scranton After 50 Club. She was
a member of Nativity Golden Age and she enjoyed her trips to Atlantic City.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother who will be deeply
missed. Surviving is a daughter, Betty Riehl and husband, Fred, Point Pleasant,
NJ and a son, John Wright and wife Christine, of Columbia, MD., 4 grandchildren,

was the widow of Louis Brozzetti who died May 26, 2005 and the couple was

and Sarah Duggan Wrobleski. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother. She was a devotee
of St. Ann. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Surviving is

August 5, 2005, at Mercy Hospice. He and his wife, the former Antoinette
DiBiasi, were married 45 years. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the
late George and Cecelia Burnum Crolly. He was a member of Nativity Of Our
Lord Church and was a retired employee of Penn Auto Service and Supply.
He was an army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a loving husband,
father, brother and grandfather. He loved to repair gadgets and enjoyed
watching his grandchildren play baseball. Also surviving are two daughters:

August 6, 2005, at home. He and his wife, the former Mary Kakareka, were
married 64 years. Born in Quebec, Canada, he was the son of the late Michelangelo
and Antonietta DiBenedetto DeMichele. He was a member of St. Mary Of The
Assumption Church, Scranton, he was a liflong member of the Elks Club.
While residing in New York City, he was a union official and organizer
of the Retail Clerks International, affiliated with the American Federation
of Labor. Following WW two, he resided in Scranton and owned and operated
several produce and nursery businesses. He was a real estate developer
and owned many properties including the Blakely Plaza on the Carbondale
Highway. He was active in local politics including serving as judge of
elections for the 12th ward, 5th district. He was a loving husband, father,
grandfather and great grandfather. Also surviving are two sons: Michael
D. DeMichele PHD and wife Rosemary and Joseph E. DeMichele and wife Carole,
both of Scranton. Four grandchildren: Dr. Michael DeMichele and wife Dr.

Helen E. Leonard Helen E. Leonard, 87, a South Scranton resident, died Sunday, June 26, 2005 at home.Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine Burke Leonard. Helen was a devout Catholic and was a dedicated member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church, South Scranton. She was also a member of it's Societies. She was well known for her Texas Weiner booth at the annual Parish Festival. In her youth, she was noted for her swimming skills. She was a National Long Distance Swimming Champion. She was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and Marywood University where she graduated with a Bachelor Of Science and Masters Degrees.For 18 years, she was chair of Marywood Health and Physical Education Dept. For 20 years, she was Director Of Athletics. She was also employed by Marywood University for 33 years as a Professor of Health and Physical Education. Helen coached Field Hockey, Women's Tennis, softball and basketball. She was the founder of Marywood's Water Ballet Program. She received numerous awards including: Marywood's COR-MARIE Medal, Inducted into Marywood's Wall Of Fame in 1996, and was the recipient of Northeastern Pennsylvania Sports Hall Of Fame Meritorious Achievement Award in 1990 Helen was an inspiration to all who knew her and will be missed by all the people whose lives she touched, especially her best friend, Otto 111. Helen also participated in the phone telethon at St. Joseph's Center's annual picnic. She was a member of the Elmhurst Country Club. Surviving are nieces, nephews and cousins. She resided in Daleville for the last 18 years with her husband, David A. Waibel, MD. Marjorie was a graduate of Gwyned Mercy University and received a Masters Degree in psychology from Marywood University, Scranton. She was employed by Mercy Hospital, Scranton, in the microbiology labaratory for 23 years. Marjorie was an avid reader of European and Civil War History. She loved all people, her animals, and gardening. She will be remembered by her family and her many good friends as being compassionate and a good listener.
