Katherine Marinelli, 88, a former resident of East Mountain, more recently of Pennswood Manor, died Wednesday, December 31, 2008, in Mercy Hospital.  She was the widow of Ralph Marinelli who died in 2001 and the couple was married for 62 years. 

Born in Astoria, NY., she was the daughter of the late Prokop Rumensky and the late Bessie Chomycz Rumensky Pluski and the late John Pluski.   She was a member of Holy Name Of Jesus Church. 

She was a loving mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother who cherished her family.  Her strong legacy will live forever in the hearts she touched.  The family wishes to thank Pennswood Manor, The Jewish Home and Mercy Hospital for all their love and support.  Surviving is a son Gary Marinelli, Westminster, CO., five grandchildren; Paula Novajosky and husband George and Kathy Dorneman and husband John, all of Scranton, Beth Harvey and Gary R. Marinelli, Jr. both of Denver, CO., and Gregory C. Marinelli, Dubai; five greatgrandchildren George Michael, Justin, Jenna, Jack and Max.  Also surviving is a brother Peter Rumensky and wife Teri, Dickson City and a sister Mary Lesniak, Scranton and two stepsisters Catherine Smith and Helen Obal, Sranton, sister in law Joan Marinelli,Scranton and nieces and nephews.  She was also preceeded in death by a son, Ronald Marinelli, a brother Michael Rumensky and three sisters Peggy Stefanik, Rose Rumensky and Helen Gruenwald.  

The funeral will be Saturday at 11:30 AM from the August J. Haas Funeral Home, Inc., 202 Pittston Ave. with Mass at 12 Noon in Holy Name Of Jesus Church to be celebrated by Msgr. Ferdinand E. Angelis

Ferdinand E. Angelis, 78, a resident of South Canaan Twp., died Wednesday, December 31, 2008, in Hospice Community Care, Dunmore.  His widow is the former Shirley Kester and the couple was married for 54 years.  Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Claude and Selma Buscarini Angelis.  He was a member of St. Eulalia's Church, Elmhurst, and was a Marine Corporal during the Korean War.  He was the chef and along with his wife owned Ferdy's Gourmet Restaurant in Hawley for 23 years. 

He was an avid horseback rider and following his retirement, he devoted his time to farming organic vegetables on his farm. 

Also surviving are three daughters Pam Carini, Elmhurst, Claudia LeVasseur and husband Frank, South Canaan Twp., Suzy Pino, Colorado Springs, CO.  and two sons Anthony Angelis, Glenwood Springs, CO. and Mark Angelis South Cannan Twp., a sister Claudette Clegg, Scranton and nieces and nephews.  The funeral will be Saturday at 9:30 AM from the August J. Rita B. Rosar, a South Scranton resident, died Friday, December 19, 2008 in Allied Skilled Nursing Facility.  She was the widow of the late Peter Rosar.  Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine Collins Barrett.  She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School.  She was a member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church and was a member of the former Altar and Rosary Society.  She formerly was employed by Rice's Millinary Shop.  She was a member of The Ancient Order Of Hibernians.  The family would like to thank the staff of Allied SNF and  Dr. Otarod  for the kindness, concern and love that was shown to Rita for the past three years.  The family also thanks Southern Hospice for their care of Rita.  Surviving is a sister Mary Gallagher, Scranton and nieces and nephews.  She was also preceeded in death by a sister Alice Clark and three brothers Teddy, Joseph and Thomas Barrett.  The funeral will be private and held at the convenience of the family.  There will be no calling hours. 

 

Dr. Robert J. Donovan

Dr. Robert J. Donovan, a psychiatrist, a resident of Scranton, died Thursday November 27, 2008 in the Community Medical Center.  Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Dr. William Murray and Katherine King Donovan.  He was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, The University Of Scranton and the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine.  Dr. Donovan served an internship at the Philadelphia General Hospital and a residency in Psychiatry at the Institute of The Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.  He worked as staff psychiatrist for the Family Court/Youth Study Center in Philadelphia from 1955 to 1979 and the Hall-Mercer Mental Health Center of the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia from 1979 to 1986.  He was on the staff of the Philadelphia General Hospital, the Pennsylvania Hospital and a faculty member of The University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine Dept. of Psychiatry.  In 1986, Dr. Donovan moved to Boston where he was a psychiatrist at the Center For Mental Health and Retardation Services in Waltham, Mass. 

Returning to Scranton in 1991, he became a staff psychiatrist at the Scranton Counciling Center until his retirement in 2005.  He was a member of St. Peter's Cathedral Parish and a veteran of the US Army.  Dr. Donovan was a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology; a member of the American Medical Association, the Massachusetts Medical Society, the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society and the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry. 

Surviving are a niece Patricia Fox and three nephews Neil, William and Robert Donovan and greatnephews and a greatniece.  Also surviving is his former wife Frances Csircsu Donovan.  He was also preceeded in death by three brothers Neil, Paul and William Donovan. 

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 9:30 AM in St. Peter's Cathedral by Msgr. David Bohr, Pastor.  Inurnment, at the convenience of the family in  Cathedral Cemetery.  Cremation,Maple Hill at Salem Road, Archbald.  There are no calling hours.   Arrangements August J. Elizabeth Brosky, November 28, 2008.  Elizabeth Brosky, 77, a resident of Old Forge, formerly of Moosic, died Friday, November 28, 2008, in Moses Taylor Hospital after being stricken ill at home.  She was the widow of Bernard W. Brosky who died  December 9, 1988. 

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Steve and Anna Salak Cotterick.  She was a member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church and also attended St. Anne's Basilica.  She and her late husband owned and operated the former Nativity Market in South Scranton for many years.  Elizabeth was a kindhearted person noted for her patience.  She was hardworking and generous to all.  She loved going to casinos, especially Las Vegas, playing the lottery and scratch off tickets.  She was the best mother a family could ever have.  She loved her son, daughter and grandchildren deeply and she will be sorely missed.  She was a devout catholic who watched daily mass on CTV. 

Surviving is a son Stephen Brosky and wife Kim, with whom she resided, a daughter Susanne Crawn and husband Robert, Gouldsboro, two granddaughters Julia and Emily Crawn, a sister Eleanor Hudak, Indian Altantic Beach, FL., a brother Michael Cotterick, Harvey's Lake and nieces and nephews.  She was also preceeded in death by a brother Steve Cotterick.

Alice J. Frankosky, November 19, 2008. Alice J. Frankosky, 91, a South Scranton resident, died Wednesday evening, November 19, 2008, at home.  She was the widow of Frank " Fritz" Frankosky who  died Sept. 3, 1985. 

She was born and raised in Scranton, and was a daughter of the late Alexander and Anna Kowaleski Modzeleski.  She was a member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church.  She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed. 

Surviving is a son  Frank Frankosky, Los Angeles, CA. ; a son-in-law Rudy Hoppe, Hector, NY. a granddaughter Sarah and husband Luke Farno, Tipton, IN. , a grandson Jesse Hoppe, Hector, NY; a greatgrandson Jacob Farno, Tipton, IN. a sister Helen Kinack, Scranton,Pa.; nieces and nephews.  She was also preceeded in death by a daughter Carol Hoppe and brothers Joseph, Alexander, Edward and Stanley and sisters Anna Smotryski and Eleanor Kloss.

John J. ( Jack )  Burns

John J. ( Jack )  Burns, November 15, 2008.  John J. ( Jack ) Burns, 72, a South Scranton resident, died Saturday, November 15, 2008, in VNA Hospice at CMC.  He had been a resident of Mountainview Care Center for the past several years.  His wife is the former Mary Joan Van Fleet.  Born January 16, 1936 and raised in Scranton, he was the son of the late John L. and Kathleen Messett Burns.  He attended Scranton public schools.  Prior to retirement, he was employed by W.W. Norton National Book Co. for over 40 years.  He was a member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church.  He was a member of the 4th Degree Father Joseph Barrett Assembly Knights Of Columbus Council and a Third Degree Knight in council 11019 Bishop Klonowski.  He was a Eucharistic Minister at Nativity Church and  volunteered  at St. Francis Kitchen and Mountainview Care Center prior to his illness. 

Jack was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.  He enjoyed antique car shows and spending time with friends and travelling to new places.  Also surviving are two daughters Kathy Harrington and husband John, Dallas, Pa., Marie McHale and husband Gene, Wynnewood, Pa, and foster son, John Rivers, Scranton.  Also surviving are grandchildren Casey and Conor Harrington and Colin, Gavin and Brady McHale. 

 Also surviving are cousins.   The funeral will be Tuesday at 9 AM from the August J. Mary A. Kellogg, 88, a resident of the East Mountain section of Scranton, died Tuesday at VNA Hospice at CMC.  She was the widow of Robert Kellogg who died December 2, 1989.  Born in Archbald, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Stephanie Piekutowski Koblinski.  She was a member of Holy Name Of Jesus Church.  She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed. 

Surviving is a daughter Carol Salvo and husband Charles, Dunmore, a sister Helen Silverstein, Plainfield, NJ, and two grandsons Robert and Kevin Salvo, and nieces and nephews.  She was also preceeded in death by two brothers Anthony and Charles Koblinski.

Noah Leigh Heil

Noah Leigh Heil died Sunday, November 9 , 2008, at home.  Noah was born in Scranton on August 24, 2008 and was the son of Kayla Clark and Stephen Heil, of Factoryville.  Noah was a blessing and was an angel in our lives. 

Also surviving are Maternal grandparents Wayne and Mary Clark, Freeland and Dana L. Clark, Scranton and Paternal grandparents Susan and John Zotynia, Scranton, and Stephen E. Heil, Tunkhannock,  Godparents Nicole and Matt Hinkley and Ryan Clark and Monica Winter.  Also surviving are aunts, uncles and cousins.

Eleanor Dobrydny, October 29, 2008,Eleanor Dobrydny, a resident of Factoryville, formerly of Scranton, died Wednesday in Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannok Twp.  after a brief illness.  She was the wife of the late Bernard Dobrydny.   

Born May 18, 1925, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Helen Kernetka Ziembecki.  She was educated in Scranton public schools and was a member of St. Stanislaus Cathedral Polish National Catholic Church.  She was a loving and caring person who would help anyone in need.  She held the belief that it is better to give than receive.  Her true joys in life were watching old time movies, cleaning the house ( for which she had a true passion), going out to eat and the New York Yankees.  She loved decorating her house with knicknacks, dolls and flowers.  She loved her family, especially her sisters and she missed them dearly along with her late son.  She loved to tell stories of the times she and her sisters spent together.  Her smile will be missed by all who knew her. 

Surviving are nieces and nephews including David Gower and wife Lynn, her caregivers.  She was also preceeded in death by a son Robert Dobrydny, a brother Joseph Kozubski and sisters Helen Palski, Stella Konopka, Claire Ossig, Frances Gibbons and Dorothy Gower.  Cremation, Maple Hill Crematory, Archbald.  There will be no calling hours.  The funeral will be held at the convenience of the family.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Center, 2010 Adams Ave, Scranton, 18509. 

 

William Murray Donovan

William Murray Donovan, Jr. October 30, 2008. William Murray Donovan, Jr. of the East Mountain Section of Scranton died Thursday at home. He was the husband of the late Miriam McCarthy Donovan who preceeded him in death three months to the day.

Born September 1, 1921, in Scranton, he was the son of the late Dr. William Muray and Kathryn King Donovan. A 1939 graduate of Scranton Central High School, he attended Penn State University from 1939 to 1941 and graduated with a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University Of Scranton in 1943 where he also attained an MBA forty years later. Mr. Donovan began his career as a sports writer for the Catholic Light Newspaper. For 25 years he was employed by International Correspondence School (ICS), advancing to advertising director. He left ICS to become National Vice-President of the American Advertising Federation in Washington, DC. He served two terms as the President of the Northeastern Pa. Ad Club and District ll secretary, Leuitenant Governor and Governor of AAF. Mr Donovan served as Public Relations Director for the Greater Scranton Chamber Of Commerce and the Lackawanna and Luzerne County Dental Societies. He taught Advertising, Management, Marketing and Public Relations at the University Of Scranton, Marywood University, Worthington Scranton Campus of Penn State, Lackawanna College, and Keystone College. For 5 years he was visiting lecturer at the Newhouse School of Jounalism, Syracuse University. He was the recipient of the A.A.F. Crystal Prism Award and the Penn State Service to Society Award. He served as a member of the Board Of Directors of the College Of Liberal Arts Penn State Alumni Society. He was Director of the Pennsylvania Assn. Of Two-Year Colleges. A lifelong member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church, he was also a member of the Scranton Canoe Club and the Greater Scranton YMCA for over 50 years. He was active in Republican Party politics which included serving as campaign manager for former Governor William Scranton. A US Army veteran of World War ll, he served in the US and Pacific Theatre of Operation at the Battle Of Okinawa.

Surviving is a daughter, Patricia Ann Fox, two sons; William Murray Donovan and Robert Joseph Donovan and wife Nancy and three granchildren Wemberly Fox, Sean and Neil Donovan. Also surviving is a brother Dr. Robert Donovan and a nephew Neil Donovan. He was also preceeded in death by two brothers Neil and Paul. The funeral will be Monday at 10 AM from the August J. Haas Funeral Home, Inc., 202 Pittston Ave., with Mass at 10:30 AM in Nativity Of Our Lord Church to be celebrated by Rev. Michael Bryant, Pastor. Interment Cathedral Cemetery. Edward M. Baranski, October 25, 2008, Edward M. Baranski, a resident of Scranton, died Saturday, October 25, 2008, in Mercy Hospice.  His wife is the former Delores Robinson and the couple was married for 11 very happy years.  Born in Scranton, He was the son of the late Martin and Mary Savage Baranski.  He formerly was employed by Haynos Cabinetmaking Co..  The family wishes to thank his very good friends Danny Iannelli and John Loomis who were very kind to Ed.  Also surviving are six stepchildren who loved and respected him and in return he loved and respected them.  Cremation  will take place at Maple Hill Crematory, Archbald.  There will be no calling hours.  A Memorial Mass will be announced at a later date, to be held at the convenience of the family.

 

 

Ruth K. Brown

  Ruth K. Brown, 83, a resident of Moscow, died Sunday, October 19, 2008, in VNA Hospice at CMC.  She was the widow of Charles D. Brown who died March 9, 2006.  The couple was married for 40 years.  Born November 7, 1924, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late McClain and Ruth Copeland Snodgrass. 

In her early years, she lived in both Scranton and on the Pymatuning Lake near Ohio on Snodgrass Lane.  Her family also lived temporarily in Florida where she attended high school.  She also attended Central High School in Scranton and then graduated from Wyoming Seminary.  She worked at the Scranton Dry Goods Co.  for four years after her marriage, receiving recognition as a top salesperson.  She next worked as a nurses' aid, first at the Hahnemann Hospital and then for twelve years at the Scranton Convalescent Home.  In 1972 she became a licensed practical nurse, attaining the 6th highest LPN grade in the state.  She worked at MosesTaylor Hospital and later at Keystone City Residence before retiring.  She was an avid reader. 

The family wishes to thank the entire staff at CMC Hospital  and VNA Hospice for the excellent care she received, and also thanks to Dr. Eugene Harasym for his care over many years.  She is survived by two daughters; Karen Nindorf and husband Jerry, Brookfield, CT., and Carol Cron and husband Tom, Scranton; two sons; W. Keith Kizer and wife Debby, Schenectady, NY., and Charles M. Brown and wife Diane, Scranton, 10 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.  Also surviving is her former husband Walter Kizer, Palm Harbor, FL. 

The funeral will be private and held at the convenience of the family.  Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Nancy Krake

Nancy Krake, 79, a South Scranton resident, died Wednesday, October 22, 2008, in Mountainview Care Center.  Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Gilgallon Noone. 

 

She was a member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church, the Downtown Senior Center and the South Scranton After 50 Club.  Prior to her retirement, she was employed as the manager of the Mercy Hospital Coffee Shop.  With her brush in hand, her love for life became works of art on canvas that will keep memories of her alive forever.   Surviving are two sons Michael R. Krake, with whom she resided and Raymond J. Krake and wife Nancy, Scranton, four daughters; Diane Coleman, Dunmore, Carol Baker and husband David, Nancy Evans and husband Wayne and Pamela Kraft and husband James, all of Scranton. 

Also surviving is a sister Alice Holmes and husband James. Coco Beach, FL, and grandchildren; David Baker, Kyle. Morgan,Christian and Jeremy Evans, Kelley Cottrell, Tyler Coleman, Michael J. Krake, Jacqueline C. Uranic, Emily and Justin Kraft and Greatgrandchildren Alexandra and Jayden Cottrell, Dillan Koch and Keira and Aela Evans, and nieces and nephews.  She was also preceeded in death by her former husband Raymond M. Krake on September 9, 2000 and three sisters Mary Noone, Winifred Durkin and Marguerite Williams and two brothers Michael and Joseph Noone.

Dominic Gordon

Dominic Gordon, a resident of East Mountain, died Saturday, October 18, 2008, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Plains Twp. He and his wife , Margaret Saar Gordon, were married for 63 years. 

Born in Scranton on March 15, 1922,  he was the son of the late Adam and Suzanne Wojtkielwicz Gauronski.  Don moved to Scranton in 1976 after raising his family in Lake Ariel.  Prior to retirement, he was employed by Grove Nylon and Scranton Housing.  He was a charter member of Hope Presbyterian Church.  Don volunteered for service in the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor doing salvage and recovery work on the battleships USS Nevada, Pennsylvania and Arizona and on the Destroyer Shaw: he also did work on the Aircraft Carrier Yorktown prior to the Battle Of Midway, all as a civilian.  Upon his return from the Pacific, he was inducted into the Army and served in the 1st Mechanized Calvary 16th Regiment "Black Horse" Throop C. 

The family wishes to express it's heartfelt and endless gratitude to the VA Hospital in Wilkes-Barre and the wonderful staff who cared for Don throughout his lengthy illness.  These friends remained at Don's side as he passed into eternal life.  Also surviving are two sons Carl and wife Minda, Charlottesville, VA. and Donald and wife Vicki, Mifflinberg, Pa.  He leaves behid grandchildren Nathanial and wife Jessica, also Elizabeth and Sarah and nieces and nephews. 

Also surviving are three sisters Bertha Oleski, Josephine Williams and Dolores Turner.  He was also preceeded in death by seven siblings Victor Gordon, Lottie Romanauskas, Anthony Gauronski, Helen Gauronski and Benjamin, Lucille and Ann Gauronski.  The funeral will be Tuesday , October 21, at 11 AM in the August J. Born in Scranton, He was the son of the late William E. and Darlene Dittfield Townend Jr.  He will be missed by all.  Surviving are three daughters Nicole Lewis, Cape Coral, FL., Shannon Morales and Stephanie Townend, both of Scranton and two sons William Townend lV, Cape Coral, FL., and Tobin Townend, Scranton, three sisters Julie Odonell, Scranton, Judy Lykowski, Philadelphia and Amanda DeStefano, Jessup and three brothers George, Scranton, David, Moosic and Frank, Throop and a number of grandchildren and nieces and nephews. 

He was also preceeded in death by a brother Richard and two sisters Agnes Shay and Debra Townend.  The funeral will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Nan Lewis, 81, a resident of East Mountain, died Friday, October 3, 2008, at home.  She was the widow of Joseph Lewis who died February 13, 1997.  Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Isabel Smallbridge Boland. 

She was a member of Holy Name Church and attended Nativity Of Our Lord Church.  She was a retired employee of Haggerty, McDonell and O'Brien Law Offices.  She was a loving mother and a loving grandmother to her only grandson Sean.  She was an animal lover and generously donated to animal causes.  She was very generous to family and friends.  She posessed a deep faith in God and her religion.  She had an incredible passion for travelling and cruising.  She was thrilled to be part of an audience with Pope John Paul ll in Italy. 

Surviving are two sons John Lewis and wife Betsy, with whom she resided and Jay Lewis, Scranton, one grandson Sean Lewis, and a sister Claire Carvalho, Scranton and nieces and nephews.  She was also preceeded in death by a brother John Boland and three sisters Dorothy O'Malley Kresge, Jean McNamara and Marion Boland.

Wendy J. Cotter, 37, a South Scranton resident, died Monday evening, September 22, 2008, at home. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of Thomas and Barbara Thomas Cotter, with whom she resided.

She was a member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church. She was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, Class of 1989, and Keystone Junior College and the Scranton State School For The Deaf. She was a member of Keystone Players Theatrical Club and Little Theatre Of Wilkes-Barre. Prior to her illness she was employed by PNC Bank. She loved the theatre and animals and was devoted to her pet poodle Katie.

Also surviving is her maternal grandmother Amelia Thomas, Scranton and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceeded in death by her maternal grandfather Alfred Thomas and her paternal grandparents Thomas and Esther Murphy Cotter.

She was the widow of Charles ( Murph ) Donlin, who died Feb. 5, 2001. The couple was married for 51 years. Born Feb. 14, 1928 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Anthony S. and Johanna Schweitzer Roedel. She was a member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Church and it's Altar and Rosary Society. She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School and was formerly employed as a nurse's aide at St. Mary's Hospital and Mercy Hospital. She loved music and greatly enjoyed playing the piano. She was a loving mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother for family meant everything to her.

Surviving are two sons Mark A. Donlin and wife Jeanne, Dunmore and Charles R. Donlin and wife Nancy, Scranton and a daughter Johanna M. Racavich and husband Alan, Scranton, a brother Robert Roedel and wife Bea, Toms River, NJ, and a sister-in-law Marion Roedel, NJ. and nine grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was also preceeded in death by three brothers Bernard, Anthony and Francis Roedel and an infant sister.

Surviving are two sons Robert Melliand,Jr. and wife Nancy, Dickson City and James Melliand and wife Kathy, Madison Twp., two brothers Martin McGurrin and wife Debbie and Robert (John) McGurrin and wife Esther, a sister Marian Edwards and husband Bob, three sisters-in-law Irene McGurrin, Marylou McGurrin and Lois McGurrin, five grandchildren Nora, Jennifer, Kristin, T.J., and Rebecca and a greatgranddaughter Abigail Rose. She was also preceeded in death by a daughter Kathleen Melliand and a son Martin Melliand and six brothers; Francis, Joseph, William,Thomas, Anthony and James McGurrin.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Peter C. and Jeanette Brazil Graff. She was a member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Church and it's Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of The Canasta Club for over 50 years. Her passion in life was to sew for her family, an art in which she excelled. She was a loving and kind wife, mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother who will be deeply missed.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Moses Taylor Hospital and especially the ICU staff of CMC for the caring, professional treatment of Marjorie.

Also surviving are three daughters; Carol Wilson and husband John and Mari Garvey and husband Michael, both of Scranton and Barbara Clewell and husband Tom, Moosic; five grandchildren John Wilson and wife Jennifer, Robert and wife Mellissa Clewell, Michelle and Stephen Clewell and Kevin Garvey and three greatgrandchildren Katie, Jack and Kelly Wilson. Rose " MA " Petrucci

Rose " MA " Petrucci, 93, a Scranton resident, died Friday evening, August 22, 2008, in Hospice Community Care, Dunmore.

She was the widow of Salvatore Petrucci who died in 1982. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Pasquale and Pauline Caprio Luongo. She was a retired housekeeper and fulltime unconditional lover and fierce defender of her family and friends. In the 70's, she along with her late husband and family operated Petrucci's Bar and Restaurant. Her cooking specialties became a sensation in the Petersburg and Upper Hill sections to those not familiar with Italian cooking. She also was the bouncer. In the 80's and 90's Rose gained local renown as a frequent caller and contributor to the "Fred William's Show" on WILK radio. Known as "Rose from Scranton" her comments on everything from politics to life issues were extremely popular. Her catchphrase was " I tell it like it is and if they don't like it; that is just too bad." Additionaly, she was a prolific letter writer to national publications and politicians; despite her lack of formal education. She was the matriarch of her family. She was happiest and most content when giving unceasingly to her family. The family wishes to give a special loving thanks and embrace to Mrs. Antionette Consagra of Pittston for her devotion and friendship in the last years of Rose's life. Rose often referred to her as " The daughter I never had".

Surviving are two sons Albert Petrucci and wife Audrey, and Jerry Petrucci and wife Tana, all of Scranton and four grandchildren; Shari Dunn, Lisa Bruno, and Jeff and Salvatore Petrucci, eight greatgrandchildren, a brother Nicholas Luongo, Scranton and nieces and nephews. She was also preceeded in death by four sisters Angeline Pizzutti, Theresa Greco, Mary DeLeo and Josephine Netti and two brothers Joseph and Anthony Luongo.

The funeral will be Tuesday with Mass at 10 AM in St. Rocco's Church, Dunmore, to be celebrated by Msgr. Constantine Siconolfi.

Miriam L. Donovan

Miriam L. Donovan, a resident of East Mountain, died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, in Hospice Community Care, Dunmore.

She is survived by her husband William and the couple would have celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary today. Born in Scranton on December 28, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rose Miles McCarthy. She was a graduate of St. John The Evangelist High School and Lackawanna Business College. She also attended Marywood University. She was employed as a tax preparer for 29 years by H&R Block and was former manager of Block's West Scranton office.

She won several awards for her achievements at H&R Block. Later, she opened her own tax preparation office in the Bank Towers Bldg in downtown Scranton. Mrs. Donovan was a former president of the Scranton Jaycettes and was president of the Lackawanna Ladies Club.

For many years she was president of the Lackawanna Arts Council and conducted the annual Lackawanna Arts Festival at Courthouse Square. She was an active volunteer to the campaign of former Gov. William Scranton and conducted the first South Scranton rally for him in his 1960 campaign for US Congress. An avid desciple of novelest William Falkner, she participated in a number of Falkner workshops held at Oxford, Mississippi. She read all of his novels. She was a member of the Scranton Canoe Club and Nativity Of Our Lord Church.

In November, 1996, she was seriously injured when she was struck by a truck while crossing Wyoming Ave. as a pedestrian. Although incurring life-threatening fractures and many injuries, she fought back to a near complete recovery. She travelled extensively with her husband and took cruises on the QE2 and the Queen Mary 2, and attended Penn State Homecoming every year. The family wishes to extend thanks to the staff of Hospice Community Care, Mountain Rest Nursing Home and the John Heinz Institute for the care rendered.

Also, thanks to Dr. Thomas Minora for his care. "She was a real fighter and lived every moment to the fullest. Nobody loved her community more than Miriam. " A tree she brought back from her beloved Mississippi and planted in her front yard is a testiment to her colorful life.

Also surviving are three children; Patricia Ann Fox, Throop, William, Fairhope, Alabama, and Robert, Clarks Summit, and three grandchildren ; Wemberly Fox, Throop and Sean and Neil, Fairhope Ala.

William J. Zwick, 86, a South Scranton resident, died Sunday, July 20, 2008, in Hospice Community Care, Dunmore.

He was preceeded in death by his wife of 55 years, Genevieve ( Jeanne ) Osborne Zwick on June 26,2002. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late William H. and Josephine Bockelkamp Zwick.

He was a member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Church and was a retired employee of Auto Express Co.. He was a Army veteran of World War ll and served with the 80th Division in a three man forward observer crew of the 905 FA Battalion all through Europe including the Balttle Of The Bulge. He was a member of DAV #1, VFW 3451, the Cooties Veterans of The Battle Of The Bulge # 19 and the 80th Division Association. He was a volunteer at both the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center and the Gino J. Merli Center in Scranton for at least 25 years.

He served as an Ambassador at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center and on the VAVS Executive Committee. He was a representative for the veterans of the Battle Of The Bulge Organization. He was twice honored by the Chapel Of The Four Chaplains receiving the Legion Of Honor Award and the Humanitarian Award. The Jewish War Veterans presented him with a Citation for his actions as a Liberator of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.

He was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, European-African-MiddleEast Campaign with four stars, Victory Medal for WWll, Normandy Campaign Medal and the Germany Occupation Medal. The personel of the Gino J. Merli Center elected him to their Wall Of Fame.

Surviving is a son William Zwick, Pleasant Mt., three daughters Patricia Matthews, Taylor, Maureen McLaughlin and husband Jack, Scranton and Linda Zwick, Tarzana, CA., a brother Roland Zwick, CA. and four granddaughters Jennifer and Kim Matthews and Kelly and Erin McLaughlin, a greatgranddaughter Ryann Matthews and nieces and nephews. He was preceeded in death by a son -in-law Edward(Slugger) Matthews and two brothers Donald and Gerard Zwick and a sister Adeline Stemplinger.

He was the husband of the former Lisa M. Cardullo. Born in Lebanon, Pa., he was the son of Thomas E. and Veronica Gristick Mann, Endicott, NY.

He was employed by Northeastern Eye Institute, attended Broome County Community College and loved architecture and art history. He was an avid photographer and one of his greatest joys was having his pictures on the cover of Cape May Magazine. He was a member of Nativity Of Our Lord Church.

Also surviving are a son Joshua Mann and a daughter Marina Mann at home. Also siblings Tama Mann and Christopher Mann, both of Endicott and Danielle Crawn and husband Peter, Windham, Pa..

Also surviving are Lisa's parents Frank and Connie Cardullo, Binghamton and Lisa's siblings Kristine Cunningham and husband Bill, Andrea Folli and husband John, Catherine DuBrava and husband Jeff and Sarah Cardullo, all of Endicott, NY. Also nieces and nephews Timothy and Michael Crawn, Ashley and Alex Cunningham, Morgan and Matthew Folli and Ethan and Owen DuBrava.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Mercy Hospital, especially those on the 8th Floor and ICU and everyone at Mercy Hospice. The family wishes to also thank their friends, too many to thank individually, special thanks to Erika, who took care of Thomas and allowed us to keep him home for so long and to all his doctors who worked so hard to help him reach his goal.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Delbert Sr, and Bridget Catherine Barashes Williams. She was a member of the United Methodist Faith. She was a Registered Nurse and was employed by local hospitals and Nursing Agencies until her illness.

She enjoyed golf, going out to dinner and travelling with her companion. She adored her grandchildren and loved to spend time with them. She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are a daughter Kelly Kern, Scranton, and three sons Daniel D. Cleveland and wife Kristi A., Mt. Cobb, Andrew C. Cleveland, Scranton and Stephen Cleveland and fiancee Lauryn Finley, Scranton. Also two sisters Margaret Czarnecki and Diane Horvath, both of Scranton and four grandchildren Kennedy and Camryn Kern, Andrew P. Cleveland and Jacob D. Cleveland and nieces and nephews

  He was preceeded in death by his wife, the former Marie Elizabeth Wynn on March 20, 2002.  Born in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Frederick W. and Mary Emma Wathen Bauer.

  He was an army veteran of WWll.  He was employed in the banking industry for many years before retiring as Vice President of Suburban Trust, now Bank Of America. 

Surviving are nieces and nephews including Joseph Bauer, Mary Frances Fletcher, Michael Holder, Terry Collier and Frederick Bauer.  He was also preceeded in death by a sister Emma Marie Holder and a brother Joseph Charles Bauer.

She was the widow of the late Gomer J.  Simmonds who died March 20, 1996.  Born in the Minooka section of Scranton, she was the daughter of the late John and Agnes Hart Rowan. 

She was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of The Bristol Volunteer Fire Dept..  She and her late husband resisded in Bristol for many years before returning to Scranton.  She was a devoted wife and loving sister and aunt. 

Surviving is a sister Ruth Miller, Minooka Section, and nieces and nephews including Joseph Hannon and wife Patty, Mary Elaine Southard, Melanie Southard and husband Leo, Marilyn Shepard and husband Michael, Nori McGrath and husband John, Richard and Robert Rowan and Michael Miller.

  She was also preceeded in death by five sisters Margaret Hannon, Agnes Saki, Esther Miller, Mary Rowan and Gert Harzinske and two brothers John and Robert Rowan.

  She was the widow of Oscar H. Lewis, Jr. who died January 29, 1993.  Born in Stroudsburg, she was the daughter of the late Richard P. and Ruhamah Ace VanAuken, Sr. 

She was a Soldier in the Salvation Army Church and was a member of the Women's Home League.  She loved to sing and loved her grandchildren.

  Surviving are a son Richard Lewis and wife Shirleen, Scranton, and a daughter JoAnne Forestin and husband John, with whom she resided, a brother Richard VanAuken, Oklahoma City, OK., and a sister Alberta VanAuken, Scranton, four grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

  A Promotion To Glory Service will be held Monday at 11 AM in the Salvation Army Chapel, 500 S. Washington Ave,. Scranton with Major Bea Connell, officiating.

  Interment Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst. 

Friends may call at the Chapel Monday from 9 to 11 AM.

Joseph F. McHale, 59, a Scranton resident, died Sunday evening , February 17, 2008, in Moses Taylor Hospital.  He was the husband of the former Sherry A. Stubbs.  He was born in Carbondale and was preceeded in death by a brother.
