John J. McDonough
April 24, 2012

Send an Online Condolence

Our Dad’s journey ended peacefully yesterday, April 24, 2012 - surrounded by his loved ones as he entered the gates of heaven. Dad was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Agnes Barber, daughter Mary Agnes and son Thomas. He joins his mother and father John and Ella McGoldrick McDonough, as well as his brother ‘Big Jim and sister Ann Walsh, along with his second wife Margaret ‘Peg’ Higgins Grindel, granddaughters Julie Marie McDonough and Shannon Marie McDonough, grandsons Brian Patrick Ives and John Patrick Grindel – as well as countless family & friends who made the journey.

John is survived by his daughters – Mary Kathleen and husband Carl Ives of Dunmore, Rosemarie and husband Peter Grazaitis of Street, MD, Mary Teresa McDonough and fiancé Tom Smith of Scranton, and his sons – Sean McDonough and wife Betty Ann of East Mountain, Kevin McDonough and wife Lisa of Moscow, Shamus McDonough and wife Sheila of Olyphant and Eugene McDonough and wife Diane of Scranton.

He is also survived by his sister Margaret Cusick, sister-in-law Ann McDonough, brother-in-law Fran Walsh, as well as step-children Frank and Candy Grindel of Delaware, Ann & Robert Murphy of Towanda, Marie and Dave McCauley of Honesdale and Matt and Marilee Grindel of Lake Winola, as well as 43 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces,.

Our Dad was very proud to be an American who cherished his Irish heritage. More often than not, Irish music was played throughout the year. Prior to our mother’s passing, a family trip was taken to County Mayo, Ireland…. To him, family was everything, whether it was the family vacations to Wildwood Crest, the picnics at Nay Aug, the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade or just the Sunday dinners - Dad loved being surrounded by his children. And as time went on, his grandchildren became the gleam of his eye.

Dad led a full life, being a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Nativity Social Club back in his day, a fixture at the Nativity Summer Festival, member of the Nativity Father & Sons, a Eucharistic Minister, the Minooka Notre Dame club, National Association of Letter Carriers Union and the 700 club.

Of course he enjoyed his yearly jaunts to Notre Dame to cheer on his “Fighting Irish”. He was especially delighted to have been a part of the induction of Reverend Edward ‘Monk’ Malloy as the 16th president of the University of Notre Dame.

Educated in the Scranton School District, John was a member of the 1940 class of Technical High School. Prior to retirement, he was employed at General Electric, a patrolman with the Scranton Police and a mail carrier with the Post Office.
