Dr. Joseph N. Marino
June 25, 2014
Dr. Joseph N. Marino, 98, a resident of Scranton, died Wednesday at home. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Jeanne M. Leo, in 1989. The couple was married for over 48 years. Born in Scranton on June 7, 1916, he was the son of the late Ralph and Frances Noto Marino. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and was a graduate of The University Of Scranton in 1938 and Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1942. He was also a member of the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the Lackawanna County Medical Association. He was an Army Veteran of World War ll, enlisting in 1944. He served as a battalion surgeon with Patton's Third Army as it moved through France, Belgium, Germany and Czechoslovakia. After leaving the European Theatre, he served with the Army of Occupation in Japan until his discharge as a captain in 1946. As with most men of that era, he did not speak of his wartime experiences but quietly took up his life where he had left off. Dr. Marino provided medical care and comfort to Scranton residents for over half a century. He inherited from his parents a strong work ethic and an equally strong Catholic faith. He married his high school sweetheart, Jeanne, in 1941. They first met when she was 13 and he was 15. The faith and values they shared were passed on to their family of six children. They are now reunited for all eternity as their faith promised. Immediately upon his discharge from the army, Dr. Marino began his medical practice, at first in a small office and then, in 1947, from his home. For over 50 years he treated patients there, never turning anyone away and charging only what the patient could afford-- frequently, charging nothing. When he wasn't in his office, he was making house calls at all hours or doing hospital rounds. He was a constant shining example to his children of compassion and dedication. Although for a time Dr. Marion took up bowling, and in later years enjoyed occasional trips with his wife and family, he was never comfortable for long away from his patients. His passion for healing was so inspiring that both a son and a grandson followed in his footsteps at Jefferson Medical College, to his delight and satisfaction. Surviving are six children; Joseph Marino and wife Katie, New Castle, Pa., Sandra Alunni and husband Al, Moscow, Robert Marino and wife Laura, Brooklyn, NY, Marilynn Monger and husband Jim, Durango, CO., Dr. Ralph Marino and wife Cindy, Philadelphia, and Jeanne Marie Marino, Coral Springs, FL. Hi is also survived by eight grandchildren; Jennifer Mack Cullings and husband Eric, Elizabeth Panagoplos and husband Andrew, Amy Alunni, Dr. Michael Alunni, Sam Bshero and wife Amanda, and Francesca, Alexander and Dante Marino; and four great grandchildren; Brandon and Ryan Panagoplos, Nathan Cullings and Molly Bshero. His brother Emil, Scranton, and his sister-in-laws Mary Marino and Madeleine Leo, Scranton, Doris Marino, Lewisburg and JoAnn Foley, San Jose CA., also survive. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Angelo, Dr. Thomas, Ralph Jr. and John and a sister Vincentina. The funeral will be Monday at 9:30 AM from the August J.
