Anthony J. DeStefano, 71, a South Scranton resident, died Wednesday morning in Hospice Of The Sacred Heart, Dunmore, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Tony and Ida Gismondi DeStefano. He was a member of St. Ann's Basilica, was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and Lackawanna College with an associates degree in Business management. He also graduated from Wilkes College with a bachelor degree in Economics. He was a 4th degree member of Knights Of Columbus, Assembly 938, having served as the Past Faithful Navigator. He also held various positions in councils 12297 and 12572. He proudly served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Monrovia APA31. After the navy, he worked at Thompson Consumer Electronics for 30 years. He spent the last 9 years at Cigna Health care before his retirement. Tony enjoyed hunting and salmon fishing with his family and friends and working in his garden. He enjoyed working at the St. Ann's Annual Novena. He is survived by his companion of 23 years, Mary Piasecki, a brother Joseph DeStefano and wife Patricia, Old Forge, his sister-in-law Lynn DeStefano, and nieces and nephews including Joseph DeStefano and wife Jillian, Jimmy DeStefano and companion Kelly and Gary DeStefano and wife Christine. Also surviving are Richard Marchegiani and Ed Piasecki who were like brothers to him. He was also preceded in death by a brother Frank DeStefano. The funeral will be Saturday at 9:15 AM from the August J. Haas Funeral Home, Inc., 202 Pittston Ave., with Mass Of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Ann's Basilica. Jeffrey M. Young, 59, a resident of South Scranton, died Friday unexpectedly. His wife of ten years is the former Theresa Gowarty. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late George and Anna Olechna Young. He was a member of St. Paul Of The Cross Parish and was a graduate of Bishop Klonowski High School. He was formerly self employed as a contractor. He was a member of St. Mary's Parish Club, president of Roaring Brook Sporting Club, 606 Club, Waldorf Club, Ukavets Club, and the American Legion, Dickson City. He was devoted to his family, was an avid Eagles and Orioles fan, his pride and joy was his Koi fish pond and his dogs. Also surviving are his children: Christopher Bird, Melissa Young, Jeffrey Michael Young and Brittany (Joy) Young, all of Scranton, his stepchildren: Michelle and Sean Wagner, Ohio, Josh and Kindra Miller, Old Forge, Jeremy and Amanda Miller, Ohio, siblings: Mary Ann Garvey and husband Patrick, Moscow, Kevin Young and wife Lisa, Scranton, John Young and wife Anita, Sturges, five grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and cousins, and his two four legged friends, Bear and Duke. J. Gerald "Jerry" Robling of Scranton, Lake Winola, and North Palm Beach, FL., died Sunday morning. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Marian Spitzer Robling, who died on April 29, 2004. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late George and Rose Demuth Robling. He was a graduate of St. Mary Of The Assumption High School, Scranton, and he was awarded a Bachelor Of Science degree in Business Administration from The University Of Scranton. Gerald spent 9 months in the US Army in the states and 29 months overseas in the 406th Anti-aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion and the 367th Combat Engineer Battalion in WW ll. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct medal, American Defense medal. European-African Middle Eastern Medal with five Bronze Stars, WWll Victory medal, and Army Of Occupation (Germany) Medal. He was employed by the Internal Revenue Service for 37 years, primarily as a revenue agent and group manager in exempt organizations. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Church, Scranton, until its closure, more recently of the Immaculate Conception Church, and was many years a member of the Scranton Club. He also was preceded in death by a sister Rose Robling Ulrich, who died in 1996. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Bob Ottoviani and James "Bo" Sarahs for their kindness and friendship to Jerry for many years. Jerry will be remembered for his quick wit and generosity. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He loved his trips to Florida and taking his guests for rides along the coast of Palm Beach. Lake Winola was a summer favorite. He enjoyed the rides around the lake in his yellow Pontoon boat where he was captain and his cousin and best friend Dan Demuth as first mate. No trip around the lake would be complete without a shout out to Jerry's beloved friends, Doug Thomas and his family, at their lake home. Jean C. Walsh of Scranton died Thursday afternoon at Moses Taylor Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Henry C. and Alice Wilkinson Walsh, she was a graduate of St. John the Evangelist High School and was a member of St. John Neumann Parish. She was a longtime employee of Lackawanna County in the former Institution District and then later in the Bureau of Children and Youth Services.
Jean's whole life was centered around her family. She was a kind and loving daughter, sister, sister-in-law and aunt.
The family would like to thank the staff of Moses Taylor Hospital and Dr. Karen Paczykowski for the kind and compassionate care she received during her stay.
She is survived by a brother, Henry C. Walsh and his wife, Marie, Dunmore; five nieces and nephews including Paul Biglin and wife, Maureen; and Henry Biglin and wife, Jayne, all of Scranton; Eugene Biglin and Kathie, Minneola, Fla.; Alice Marie Hopkins, Moosic; Mary Jeanne Riviello and husband Frank, Old Forge; numerous great-nephews, great-nieces and several cousins.
She was also preceded in death by sister and best friend, Elizabeth Walsh Biglin.
The funeral will be Saturday with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Church, 1414 E. Elm St., Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. John Ruth. Entombment, Cathedral Cemetery Mausoleum.

Nancy Strasburger, 80, a resident of Scranton, went to be with our Lord Sunday morning unexpectedly at Moses Taylor Hospital.
Born in Dunmore to the late Peter and Pauline Kollonige Mallas, she graduated from Dunmore High School and was employed at Kaltenbach's bakery until their closing in 1989.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Strasburger of 63 years, and children, Cheryl Green; Donna Strasburger; Susan Banks-Hawk and husband Dale; Nancy Talapa and husband Charles; Donald Strasburger, Jr. and wife Donna Florimonte and Mary Beth Strasburger and fiance Franklin Pietsch, 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren with 1 on the way and a sister Betty (Honey) Hedrich.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Petruk and son-in-law, R. Bradley Green.
She was a long time member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in South Scranton, a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and a member in the Women's Auxiliary of the DAV, presently, she was a member of St. John Neumann Parish. Her greatest passion was her husband and family with whom she enjoyed long talks, cooking, baking, trips to the casinos and the 1000 islands, running to the hairdresser and lunch dates.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Kenneth Rudolph, Dr. Alessandro Smiraldi, Dr. John Prior, Dr. Charles Deck, Dr. Roger Getz, DaVita Dialysis Scranton, Commonwealth Home Health and a special appreciation to Elaine Allegrucci for her lifetime family guidance and two wonderful home caregivers Oto Rivera and Lucy Rodriguez.
Nancy touched everyone she met in a special way. Her loving spirit, compassionate ways and special insight will be truly missed.

Anthony Roedel, 61, a resident of Scranton, died Friday at home, in the arms of his wife, after a brief illness. His wife is the former Gae Valenti and the couple was together for 27 years. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Francis and Elizabeth Opinski Roedel. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and attended ICC Parish. He was formerly employed locally as a chef. He was a member of the former Nativity Social Club and Scranton Liederkranz. Known by many, loved by all, he was a jokester and storyteller. He was a devoted husband, father and pop pop, he would give anyone anything. Tony was a legacy, one of a kind. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Pirates fan. He was a retired employee of Iron Worker's Local 489. He was an avid hunter and golfer and enjoyed gardening and car shows. He was an avid Steelers and Yankees fan. He was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law and friend who adored his granddaughter and will be deeply missed. Helen H. Zatorsky, 96, of Scranton, passed into eternal life on Monday at Allied Services Skilled Nursing Center. She was the widow of August A. Zatorsky, who passed away April 2, 1971.
Born in Avoca on April 14, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Catherine (Blicharz) Voyack. She was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Parish, Scranton.
After graduating from Duryea High School in 1939, she moved to Newark, NJ where she met and married her late husband and they raised their family.
Soon after retiring in 1983 from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NJ where she worked as an underwriter, she returned home to Pennsylvania settling in Scranton. As a retiree, she was an avid ballroom dancer who also enjoyed traveling and craftwork. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her daughter Mrs. Patricia Anello and granddaughter Michelle Beth, both of Bradley Beach, NJ; a grandson Robert M. Zatorsky, wife Lisa, and two great-grandchildren, all of Cranford, NJ; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Robert A. Zatorsky; sisters Anna Spindler, Marie Roginsky, and Laura Melioris; and brothers Frank, John, and Ted Voyack.

Monsignor George R. Demuth, Pastor Emeritus of Saint Mary Of The Assumption Church, Scranton, and the oldest priest of the Diocese of Scranton, died October 23, 2017 at Holy Family Residence, Scranton.
Monsignor Demuth, son of the late John J. and May Edwards Demuth, was born in Scranton on March 16, 1919. He received his early education at Saint Mary Of The Assumption Parish School. At the age of fourteen he enrolled at the Josephinum Pontifical College and Seminary, Columbus, Ohio, where he completed his studies for the priesthood. Monsignor Demuth was ordained to the priesthood there on March 10, 1946, by Archbishop Giovanni Cicognani, Apostolate Delegate to the U. S. at the time.
Following ordination, Monsignor Demuth served as Assistant Pastor at Saint Boniface, Williamsport and Saint Nicholas, Wilkes-Barre. He was named Administrator of Ascension Parish, Williamsport March 3, 1967. On September 9, 1970 he was named to his first and only pastorate at his home parish, Saint Mary Of The Assumption Church in Scranton, where he remained for twenty-six years, until his retirement and appointment as Pastor Emeritus on July 8, 1996.
Monsignor Demuth was named a Prelate of Honor by his Holiness Pope John Paul II on March 17, 1983 and given the title Monsignor.
Monsignor Demuth also served as the Spiritual Director of the Williamsport Special Religious Education Program; the Junior Holy Name; the Knights of Saint George and its auxiliary; the Legion of Mary; Apostleship of Prayer and the Catholic Women's Union; and taught religion at St. Nicholas School, Wilkes Barre and College Misericordia, Dallas.
He is survived by a sister, Marion Kelly, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Skaluba.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Thomas and Claire Gilhooley Evans. He was a member of St. John Neumann Parish and was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1969. He formerly co-owned BriDon Mechanical and later used his skills and expertise to enter the wholesale and retail market of the plumbing industry. He was an NHRA enthusiast and loved the Steelers. His grandchildren were the center of his world and his greatest joy. Winifred (Winnie) Klee, 78, a resident of Scranton, died Wednesday morning in Hospice Of The Sacred Heart, Dunmore. She was the widow of the late Scranton Police Assistant Chief James J. Klee who died in 2012. The couple were married for 50 years. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late James and Winifred Noone Durkin. She was of the Catholic faith and was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. She was formerly employed in the local garment industry. She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister who will be deeply missed. Patrick J. Murphy, 69, a South Scranton resident, died Saturday morning in Allied Rehab at Moses Taylor Hospital. His wife of almost 40 years is the former Mary Kay Moran. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Charles, Sr. and Marcella McGee Murphy. He was a member of St. John Neumann Parish, was a graduate of South Scranton Central Catholic High School, received his Bachelors Degree in Science and Sociology from the University Of Scranton and received his Master's Degree in Public Administration from Marywood College. He was formerly employed by Patrick Outdoor Media, he initiated Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Lackawanna County, and he retired from Private Brands Specialty, Inc. He was a member of the St. Patrick's Parade Assn. of Lackawanna County where he was Past President, Historian, and was the "Voice" of the St. Patrick's Day Parade. He was a board member of Shamrock Heart Foundation. He was an officer and veteran of the Vietnam War and was a member of the American Legion. Pat was an avid golfer, coached sports and cherished his time spent with his grandson Ben, and late canine companion, Jack. He loved singing and dancing anywhere at anytime. Pat was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and son who will be deeply missed. Thomas was a graduate of The University Of Scranton and he worked as an engineer/project leader for naval and nuclear power plant construction all over the world for many years, with Babcock & Wilcox and LINK Resources. After retirement, Thomas and his wife moved to Westport, CO. Mayo, Ireland where they lived in their dream cottage for 8 years. Afterwards, they moved to The Village of Santiago where they lived the past 8 years. Also surviving are a daughter Maureen Farrell, Indianapolis, IA, and a son Thomas Farrell, the Villages, FL.; granddaughters, Erin(Justin) and Ariel(Ted); and great granddaughters, Jasmine and Maya, brother Joseph Farrell and wife Maryann, the Villages, FL., and a sister Mae Walsh and husband John E., Towanda, and nieces and nephews. Robert M. Moran, Sr., 92, a South Scranton resident, died Wednesday at home after being stricken ill. He was the husband of the former Ann Cannon who died in 2012 and the couple were married for 59 years. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Michael and Amelia Bierwirth Moran. He was a member of St. John Neumann Parish and was a member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Church until its closure. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School. He played piano since the age of 14 and also taught piano lessons. He was a resident of Moosic Lakes and enjoyed spending his summers there, he also enjoyed spending his winters at Moran Camp in Morris, Pa. He was a veteran of WWll, serving as a mechanic in the Army Air Corps. He was employed for 42 years by the US Postal Service and he was a member of NARFE. He taught literacy for over 25 years for SCOLA. Bob was very witty and always had something funny to say. Surviving are three sons; Joseph Moran and wife Eileen, Moosic, Robert Moran, Jr., and wife Lori, Scranton, and Michael Moran, New Columbia, and three daughters; Eileen Eiden and Mary Kay Murphy and husband Patrick, all of Scranton, and Carol Naples and husband Robert, Jr., Wyoming, Grandchildren; Bridget Hunter and husband E.T., Caitlin and Kathleen Murphy, Kellie, Kara, Robert,and Bryan Moran, Ryan McDonnell and fiancee Jessica McDermott, Christopher and Christine Maple, Mathew Moran and Robert Naples lll, a great grandson Benjamin Hunter, a sister Lois Nolan, Pittston, and Carol Huffman and husband John, who was raised as a sister to Bob, nieces and nephews. Kleeman, Sr., who died in 2011. The couple were married for 55 years. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Sr. and Aline Polster Moran. She was an Honors graduate of West Scranton High School, Class of 1955. She was a member of St. Matthew's United Evangelical Lutheran Church, Scranton. She was formerly employed by Acme Fast Freight and Fairview Memorial Park, and she was a wonderful homemaker, her family was the most important focus of her life. Over the years, she participated in many activities with her children. She will be dearly missed by family and friends. He was employed as an electrician with Local 81, IBEW, and was a member of Local 81 Union. Until his illness, he enjoyed golfing with various groups and bowling with several leagues. He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. Leroy J. Phillips, 90, a resident of Scranton, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, Wednesday evening at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. Born in Scranton, Leroy was the son of the late LeRoy W. and Hilda Needham Phillips. He and his wife, the former Elizabeth Brier, recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Also surviving are daughters, Mari King and husband, David, Scranton; Nancy Cicerini and husband, Gary, Moosic; and son, Lee Phillips and wife Susan, Hamilton, VA; grandchildren, Reagan King, Roaring Brook Twp.; Evan Phillips, Melbourne, FL.; and Elizabeth Wilkens and husband, Jason, Sagamore Hills, OH; sister, Evelyn Rodgers, Scranton; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five sisters; Lillian Eiden, Arlene Patricia Phillips, Dorothy Whalen, Hilda Claire Phillips and Claire Catherine Phillips.
Leroy was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Parish, and a former member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church and its Holy Name and St. Vincent de Paul societies. Leroy was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, a member of St. Mary's MOYAS championship basketball team, and a biddy basketball coach for many years. He was a WWll Army veteran and attended the Army School of Finance in Indiana. Leroy was employed by Acme Fast Freight for 27 years and retired from PG&W as Operations Center Manager. He served on the Supreme Board of Managers of the Catholic Knights of St. George for nine years, functioned as chairman of the National Fraternal Committee for four years, and was a member of its local Branch 45. In 1970, he was appointed by then PA Governor Raymond P. Shafer to the Lackawanna County Board of Assistance. He was also a member of St. Mary's Parish Club and American Legion Post 948.
The family wishes to thank Geisinger Drs. Richard Martin, Robert Leschingski, and Connor Dougherty, the 6th floor nursing staff at GCMC, and the staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their extraordinary care and compassion.

Agnes M. Nebesky Golden, 87, a resident of the East Mountain section of Scranton, died Tuesday morning at home. She was the wife of Edward C. Golden who died in 2012. Born in Old Forge, she was the daughter of the late Jerome and Natelina Giombetti Vantaggi. She was a graduate of Old Forge High School and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. She formerly owned and operated Scranton Dry Cleaners. She enjoyed cooking and delivering her meals to elderly homebound residents who enjoyed her homemade tortellini and chicken soup. She enjoyed volunteering for many organizations. Surviving are a stepdaughter Andrea Weckstein and husband Ken, Washington, DC, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews including Susan Tatoian, CT., and dear friends including Dan and Vivian Cleveland, Scranton. She was also preceded in death by her son Edward Nebesky, and four brothers; Alfred (Cubbi), Edmund, Baldo and Edward (Ikie) Vantaggi. The family wishes to thank Dr. Fogley for all his care over the years for Agnes. Christopher L. Spathelf, 56, of Laurel, Maryland, formerly of Scranton, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 30. He was the son of the late Christian W. and Claire Palmer Spathelf. Chris graduated from South Scranton Central Catholic High School in 1978 and the University Of Scranton in 1982 with a degree in computer science. He went on to achieve master degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from John Hopkins University. Chris had a long accomplished career first with National Security Administration and lastly with Fannie Mae as their technical engineer. He is survived by his sister Claire Festa and four nieces; Carrie Giannone, Bridget Festa, Stephanie Bentler and Tracy Murphy, four great nieces and nephews; Nikki Beers, Sierra Koch, Saul Langan and Gia Festa, and four great great nieces and nephews; Gavin and Chella Beers and Charlotte and Hudson Koch. Marcella M. Reif, 93, a former South Scranton resident, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday morning in Holy Family Residence. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Edmund H. and Josephine Lutz Reif. She was a member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Church until its closure and she was a graduate of St. Mary's High School. Marcella was particularly proud of the years she worked at her family's business, Lewis and Reif, Electrical Distributors. Later in life, she was employed as the secretary for St. Mary's Parish. Marcella also loved to decorate and jokingly called herself an "Inferior Desecrator". She applied her skills to the halls of Holy Family. She was a member of the Mallinckrodt Auxiliary and the South Scranton After 50 Club. Surviving is a sister, Sister Edmund Joseph Reif, S.C.C., and 7 nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by two brothers; Cyril and Edmund, and a sister Rosalie Steinmetz. Christopher C. Esgro, 35, a South Scranton resident, passed away unexpectedly at home on Saturday. Born in Scranton, he was the son of Carmen, Jr. and Elizabeth Langan Esgro. Chris graduated from Scranton High School and went on to obtain a bachelor's degree from Drexel University. Before returning home to Scranton, Chris lived and worked in Philadelphia and Florida for several years pursuing a career in Internet Marketing and sales. He was a natural salesman who was outgoing, hard-working and had a relentless drive for knowledge. Chris could communicate with everyone. With a joke or just a look, he could bring a smile to your face no matter the setting. He lived to make people laugh and his talent for story-telling was unmatched. Chris loved sports and his teams and would never shy away from a debate about what team or player was the best. His irresistible personality made him the life of every family gathering. Chris tried to make the most of every moment. While his loss was too soon, his spirit for life will continue to touch everyone that knew him. He will forever be missed. (Jack) McIntyre, Sr., 78, a resident of the East Mountain section of Scranton, died unexpectedly Monday, June 12, in Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family. His wife of 52 years is the former Charlotte Powell. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Carmella Donnolly McIntyre. He was a member of St. Anthony Of Padua Church and was a graduate of Scranton Public Schools. He was a US Army veteran and was a member of Boulevard Memorial Post VFW 7251, and St. Mary's Parish Club and the German American Federation, Scranton. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as an electrician by IBEW, Local 81. John loved traveling the country with his wife and enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as often as possible. He was a very loving and caring person and would help anyone with anything. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Paul O'Malley, 61, of Dickson City, passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2017, at his home. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Jack and Alice Weis O'Malley, he lived the majority of his life in Dickson City.
Paul was hardworking, strong, loving and most importantly a devoted husband and father. Paul is survivedby his wife and best friend of 39 years Sherry O'Malley. He spent the last few years caring for Sherry at home trying to fulfill her wishes. He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren; Kerry and husband Adam Jaffe and their children Luna and Tucker, Scranton, Molly and her husband Andrew Murphy and their daughter Grace, New York, New York, Nicholas O'Malley and his sons Finley and Eamon, Dickson City, and Thomas O'Malley and his soon to be wife Katelyn Perigard, Seattle, WA. Paul is also survived by his sister Mary Alice and husband Robert Nichols, and brothers Thomas and wife Debbie O'Malley and Jerry and his wife Joannie O'Malley. Paul is also survived by numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Paul loved carpentry and worked as a contractor for 30+ years. In his spare time, Paul enjoyed doing projects around the house and was an avid gardener. He took great pride in his Irish heritage and cherished his two Irish Terriers Macushla and Fiana. Paul was quite resourceful, often referred to as our very own McGyver. He was truly the smartest man who possessed encyclopedic knowledge.
Paul was undoubtedly the nicest, kindest, and most warmhearted person one could ever know. He was a jolly man, full of fun and laughter. His motto was "eat, drink and be merry" and anyone who entered his home knew that is how he lived his life. He loved a good joke, no matter how inappropriate it might have been. He took great pride in making sure everyone around him was smiling and enjoying life. He found the greatest joy by making others laugh. The family has asked for privacy at this very difficult time but will be hosting a celebration of his life in the coming months. Catherine A. Poli, 82, a lifelong resident of the Nativity Section of Scranton, died Wednesday at Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph C. Poli, in 1987. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late John and Alice McGeever Harrity. She was a member of St. John Neumann Parish and was a graduate of South Scranton Catholic High School. Before retirement, she worked at Mercy Hospital in the Housekeeping Department. Catherine was a gentle and loving woman known as the "Matriarch" by brother Tom, who was devoted to her family in every way. She enjoyed bingo, dining out, listening to and singing music, and taking get away trips to Cape Cod and Ocean City with her daughter, Linda. She will be forever missed by her family and friends. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Poli, with whom she resided, a brother Thomas Harrity, Scranton, and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also preceded in death by a son Joseph T. Poli in 1983, and a sister, Mary Alice Kupiec, and three brothers; Jackie, Jerry and Joseph Harrity. Anita Fischbach (Miller), 71, a resident of Scranton, died unexpectedly at home early Saturday morning. Born in Newton, NJ., she was the daughter of the late Jack and Eleanor E. Vanzile Owens. She was of the Presbyterian Faith and attended Newton High School. Prior to her illness, she was employed by Gino Merli Veteran's Center. Anita was "Mom" to everyone downtown. She was a loving, devoted and dedicated mother who will be deeply missed. Surviving are a son Troy Fischbach, West Pittston, and a daughter Bernadette (Missie) Fischbach, with whom she resided, a sister Fay Durenleau and husband Anthony, Kansas, and many nieces and nephews. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and was employed in the local garment industry. She was a member of the ILGWU and she was very active in various senior citizens clubs. She also enjoyed reading. Caroline was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be deeply missed. Her life was her family. Surviving are four daughters; Andrea Latimer and husband Richard, Ocean View, NJ., Diane Matus and companion Jimmie Breshers, Tunkhannock, Cindy Birtel, Scranton and Lori Gilhooley, with whom she resided, Springbrook Twp., grandchildren; April Hall, Holly Matus, Bryan Latimer, Jeremy Latimer, Amber Gilhooley, and Darien Gilhooley, and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Gino Corti, 85, a South Scranton resident, died Saturday morning in Giesinger Wyoming Valley. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Vincent and Frances Laboranti Corti. He was a member of St. Paul Of The Cross Parish and was a lifelong member of St .Francis Of Assisi Church until its closure. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Capital Records, Sabia Bus Co., was the caretaker for Italian-American Cemetery, and retired from Mercy Hospital. Gino had a passion for fireworks and he enjoyed a good fireworks show. He also enjoyed a good plate of gnocchis and ravioli. The family would like to thank Dr. Kadeire, Dr. Harjai and Dr. Yanoshak and the nursing staff of ICU. A special thank you to Denise McLoud for all her care of Gino. Surviving are a son Scott Corti, Scranton and a daughter Jo Ann Corti and companion Randy Buckas, Ransom, several grandchildren and a niece Patricia Violini and partner Missy Orlando, Wyomissing. Betty was a proud homemaker, a devoted animal lover, great cook and baker, and enjoyed music and movies. She was a friend to everyone she met. He was a member of St. John Neumann Parish and was a graduate of St. Mary Of The Assumption High School. Prior to his retirement, he was a self-employed landscaper for many years. He was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He was an avid bowler, loved music, enjoyed softball, and was a sports enthusiast. Shirley Marie Slangan, a lifelong resident of South Scranton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday at Riverside Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
Born on September 29, 1931, Shirley is the daughter of thelate Frank and Margaret Kellerman Slangan to whom she was totally devoted. She graduatedin 1949 from Scranton Technical High School where she was salutatorian of her class, and prior to retirement was employed as a legal secretary in the lawfirm of Oliver, Price & Rhodes. She was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Eagles, Boston Celtics, and the Peanuts comic strip.
She is survived by a brother, Robert, and wife, Catherine,Scranton; two nieces, Michelle Slangan Burge, wife of Glenn Allan, Taylor, and Rebecca Slangan, Exeter; a great-nephew, Glenn Robert, Taylor; and several cousins, including Walter "Babe" Gantz, who held a special place in Shirley's heart.
The family would like to extend its gratitude to Riverside Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, VNA Hospice & Home Health, Geisinger Community Medical Center, Clarks Summit Senior Living, Atty. Paul Horger, and Carol McMullen for the wonderful care and concern extended to Shirley duringher illness.

Florence Irene Sweeney, 96, of Scranton, died March 19, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Terrence P. Sweeney Sr., who died on October 4, 2009.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late George and Irene Reidmiller Wagner. She graduated from St Mary's Assumption High School and was a parishioner of St. Paul's Church, Green Ridge since 1950.
In her youth, Flossie and her brothers and sisters were avid, excellent speed skaters at Mountain Lake, reveling in cold weather. Before marriage, she helped support her family by operating the loom in various area textile mills. Married in 1944, Florence then had a long and full life spent caring for her famly as a loving mother and a devotee of St. Ann.
Surviving are her daughters Christine Sweeney Elling, Patricia Sweeney Ching and Mary Anne Sweeney; her sons Terrence Sweeney Jr, Daniel Sweeney and Brian Sweeney; her grandchildren; Daniel Sweeney Jr., Nathan De Carlo, Robert Sweeney, Katelyn Sweeney Ching, Mitchel Elling, Matthew Ching, Fiona Sweeney and Noah Sweeney; her great grandchildren Porter Sweeney, Margo, Mikhail and Finnoula MacSweeney; sisters Irene Guse, Alice Pane and brother George Wagner Jr., many beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her brother Joseph Wagner and sister Louise Janowski.

Cecelia Spangler, a resident of the East Mountain Section of Scranton, died Friday night at Reading Hospice, Reading, after an illness. Her husband of 50 years is Robert Spangler. Born in Potterdale, Clearfield County, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Howard Moore and Cora Gaines. Ceil was of the Catholic faith and attended school in Potterdale. Ceil worked at Mayflower MFC for 36 years and then was employed by Dunmore Elementary School cafe until her retirement. Ceil was a very hardworking, strongwilled person who took on all the challenges in her life. She enjoyed going on vacation and going on rides to the casino with Bob. Ceil loved sewing, large puzzles, and getting together with her family. He formerly was employed by Golo Footware. Jerry was a well known area drummer, who played with several local bands including the Bell Mountain Blues Band. Lately he jammed at O'Leary's Bar. He was a loving husband and brother who was well liked by all who met him. He enjoyed watching the birds in his back yard. Evan Dennis Powell, 56, of Scranton died peacefully surrounded by his family Friday morning after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Scranton December 29, 1960, Dennis was the son of the late Ernest D. Powell Jr and Theresa (Chestnut) Powell. He graduated valedictorian from MMI Preparatory School in Freeland and continued his education at Harvard University. Dennis worked for the State of Pennsylvania as Deputy Director of Probation & Parole in Philadelphia and retired in 2010. Dennis loved being on the golf course in the Spring/Summer and cheering on the Cleveland Browns in the Fall/Winter.
Dennis is the proud father of four beautiful daughters Gia Fendeis, Buffalo, NY, Navy Seaman Elyse Powell, Monterey, CA, Emma Powell, Reading, PA, Riley Powell, Chester, MD, and a handsome son Evan Powell, Reading, PA.
Also surviving are his sisters Ellen Trusty (Terry), Ester Barnes (Darwin), Emily, brothers Derek (Stephanie), Dever, Dean (Regina) and Drew (Simona), fifteen nieces and nephews some of whom affectionately called him "Uncle Mr. Powell" and six great nieces and nephews.
Dennis walked through this journey with the love and support of Meghan McGoff, Scranton, at his side.
Dennis was preceded in death by his brother Ernest D Powell III.
Keeping in mind the importance of education in Dennis' life, a fund has been set up to help with higher education costs for his children. Memorial donations can be sent to: Children of Dennis Powell Higher Education Fund, People's Security Bank & Trust 1901 Sanderson Ave Scranton, Pa 18509.

Frank M. Giacomini, 60, a South Scranton resident, died Sunday in Moses Taylor Hospital after a brief illness. His wife is the former Gloria Kollra. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Edward and Ida Mary Mallick Giacomini. He was a member of St. Francis Of Assisi Church until its closure. He was a graduate of Mid Valley High School, class of 1974, and he attended Keystone Junior College. He was employed as the manager of Customer Relations by the Dunmore Post Office until his retirement. He was a member of the Knights Of Columbus, Council 11767, Corpus Christi. Also surviving are two daughters; Gloria Farrell, Scranton, and Therese Giacomini, at home, a brother Edward J. Giacomini and a sister Carol Ann DeMichele and a granddaughter, Briani Mae Farrell. A Blessing Service will be conducted Friday at 10 AM with Rev. Michael Bryant officiating in the August J. Haas Funeral Home, Inc., 202 Pittston Ave. Friends may call Friday morning from 9 to 10 AM. Don Pendell, 90, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 22, 2017, in Pottstown Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years Norma Buscarini Pendell (Nov. 8, 2014). Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late John D. Pendell and Alma Rosar Pendell. He enlisted in the navy at age 17 serving in World War II, in the Sea of Japan - on the Atom Bomb Team, and the Korean War. After 20 years of service in electrical maintenance, with a wife and young son, he finished his naval career as a Chief Petty Officer and retired from the Navy. He settled in Ridley Park with his family, where they lived for 50 years. He worked the rest of his career as an electrician craftsman in Reynolds Metals, Scott Paper & Foamex. A sailor at heart, he attended his annual USS Essex CV-9 ship reunions in Piney Point, MD. He loved dogs, enjoyed fishing, boxing and all things 'political'. For the last two years, he greatly enjoyed living next door to his grandchildren in Pottstown. He will be missed by all who knew him. Surviving are a son, John Pendell and wife Karen, Pottstown; a daughter, Donna Cericola and husband Ken, Bucks County; two grandsons, John Pendell Jr. and his wife Jess, Birdsboro and Anthony Pendell, Nashville, TN. He was also preceded in death by his three brothers, Russell, Joe and Phillip Pendell, and a sister, Mary Walsh Pendell. There will be a private service from 9 -10AM in the August J. Haas Funeral Home, 202 Pittston Ave, Scranton, PA. Interment, Italian-American Cemetery, Minooka section of Scranton.

Gertrude C. Gillott, 59, a resident of Clarks Summit, died Monday morning at home after an illness. She was the wife of Bernard Gillott for 32 years. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Robert E., Sr. and Mary L. White McGoff. She was a member of Our Lady Of The Snows Church. She was a graduate of Bishop Klonowski High School and Bloomsburg State College. She was employed as a teacher by the Diocese Of Scranton and taught at St. Mary Of The Assumption School, Marian Catholic, Nativity Of Our Lord Campus, and was currently at St. Mary Of Mount Carmel School, Dunmore. Gert was a dedicated, compassionate educator devoted to Catholic education. All whose lives she touched remember her with warmth and love. Possessing a wry sense of humor, Gert made friends that were loyal for life. Gert enjoyed traveling with Bernie, spending their 25th anniversary in Ireland among family and friends. Gert lived her faith. She was an active member of Our Lady of the Snows/St. Benedict serving as a Eucharistic minister and lector. She is survived by her soulmate, Bernie. A special thank you to the GCMC staff, Fox Chase BMT Unit and the people that helped Gert on her special journey. Thomas P. Redding, Sr., 93, a South Scranton resident, died Saturday night in Regional Hospital. His wife of 68 years is the former Marie Lenherr. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Frank and Mae Cunningham Redding. He was a member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Parish until its closure and presently is a member of St. Paul Of The Cross Parish. He was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, attended The University Of Scranton, and was a graduate of Penn State University. He was employed by the Scranton School District as an Industrial Arts Teacher at Scranton Technical High School for 36 years. He was a proud member of American Federation Of Teachers. He was an Army infantry combat veteran of World War ll, fought in The Battle Of The Bulge, and was the recipient of The Bronze Star. He was a member of The American Legion and Veterans Of Foreign Wars. He was a man of strong faith and honor. Also surviving are two daughters; Ellen Redding, Scranton, and Kathleen Redding Bellitto and husband Paul, East Amherst, NY, a son, Thomas P. Alberta Lydia Greene Massenkeil, 96, a resident of South Abington Twp., died Sunday morning in Abington Manor. She was the widow of Leo Massenkeil who died in 1993. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Albertus and Mary Kathryn Allen Greene. She was a member of Hickory Street Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and the Powell School Of Business. Surviving are six children; Mary K. White and husband, John, Lithia Valley, Ann Massenkeil, S. Abington Twp., Lois Mangiola and husband Domenick, and Leah Massenkeil, all of Scott Twp., Joseph Massenkeil and wife Patty, Long island, NY., and Thelma Davis, Taylor, eight grandchildren; Cindy Mayer, John White ll, Tania Mangiola, Gabrielle Outland, Alida Nemeth, Leo Massenkeil and Sam Massenkeil, 10 great grandchildren and a neice Jean Goetz and two nephews Robert and James Spangler. She was also preceded in death by an infant son Leo Massenkeil, a granddaughter Wendy Davis, a son-in-law Charles Davis and a sister Florence Spangler. Mary Griffith Joseph of Moosic died Peacefully at Hospice Of The Sacred Heart, Dunmore, on Sunday. Born in Scranton on April 23, 1928, Mary was the daughter of the late George L. and Agnes D. Davitt Griffith. She was married for 55 years to the love of her life, Raymond D. Joseph. He preceded her in death in 2004. She was a graduate of Central High School and worked for Bell Telephone before they started raising their family. She was devoted to her Catholic faith, but above all, she loved and cherished her family. Throughout her life she was actively involved in her family church, Nativity Of Our Lord. She was a volunteer at the St. Francis Kitchen in Scranton for 20 years. She will be forever the matriarch for our family. We have been eternally blessed by having her for 88 years in our lives. She was a loving wife, and had a PhD in mother, grandmother and great grandmotherhood. We love you mom and find great comfort knowing you are now with dad and God, Our Lord and Savior. Surviving are a daughter Gail Dowling and best son-in-law, Harry, Moosic, with whom she resided, sons Ray Joseph, Capatola, CA., and Jeff Joseph ( Nancy), Montclair, NJ., grandchildren; Michael Dowling, Erin Rickard (Joseph), Stephen Dowling (Alexandra), Jeffrey Joseph (Jessica), Andrew Joseph, Kendra Guisado (Raul), and Daniella Gonzalez. Rickard lll, Alison Mary Rickard, Josephine Tess Dowling, Nelle Adeline Joseph, and Dylan Guisado, her sister-in-law Marigrace Griffith and several nieces and nephews. Mary was also preceded in death by her son Larry R. Joseph, her daughter-in-law Marynell Colleran Joseph, grandson Ryan James Joseph, her sisters Patricia Hartnett, Ellen Ferguson, Kathryn Griffith, her brother George M. Griffith, brothers-in-law Robert J. Hartnett, and Arthur J. Ferguson. Fred A. (Fritz) Melliand, 84, a South Scranton resident, died Friday, surrounded by his loving family, in Hospice Of The Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit, Dunmore. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, the former Jean C. Curry, who died in 1996. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Francis X. and Irene Herz Melliand. He was a member of St. John Neumann Parish and was a graduate of St. Mary Of The Assumption High School. He was employed during his career as a carpenter by various construction companies. Prior to his retirement, he was employed in the maintenance department of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He was a member of the local carpenter's union. Fritz served in the US Army, stationed in Panama from 1957 to 1959. "Thanks, dad, for everything." Surviving is a son John Melliand, with whom he resided, and nieces and nephews. L. Jean Haas, 89, a South Scranton resident, died Sunday Afternoon, surrounded by her loving family, in the Jewish Home Of Eastern Pa. She was the widow of the late August J. Haas, a South Scranton funeral director who died September 5, 1994. The couple was married for 41 years. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late George O. and Lydia Greene Klumpp. She was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, Class of '45 and was graduated from Marywood College in 1949 with a Bachelor Of Arts degree and acquired 24 additional credits at Wilkes University and Indiana University. She was a member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Church and its Altar and Rosary Society until its closure. She was presently a member of St. John Neumann Parish. She was a member of Scranton City Chapter DAR, John Hand Chapter Colonial Dames Of the XVII Century, PSERS and PSAR organizations, NEA, Lackawanna County Chapter ABWA, University Of Scranton Chapter Of Phi Delta Kappa, and was Kappan Of The Year 2001, American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 948, and The Rebellious Belles, Red Hats Society. Our mother was extremely proud of all of her activities, as she always told us, they were her identity. These other past organizations were Ladies Of St. Mary's Veterans, St. Mary's Mothers Guild, South Catholic Mothers Guild, Central High School PTA, St. Mary's Boy Scouts Mothers Club, The Women Teachers Club, Scranton Education Assn., American Federation Of Teachers, Nativity Social Club Auxiliary, South Scranton After 50 Club, and Nativity Golden Age. Prior to her marriage, she taught in Rush High School, Montrose, and Cheltenham High School, Philadelphia. After her marriage in 1952, she assisted her husband and her son Gus, in the operation of their funeral home and she raised their five children. After the children were grown, she returned to her love of educating students by being employed by Scranton School District. She taught English, Latin, Spanish and Social Studies in East Scranton Intermediate, North Intermediate, and West Scranton Intermediate, eventually retiring from Scranton Central High School in 1988. Jean loved to visit the cultures she taught about, to see people in their local environment, she firmly believed that by visiting other countries it would help to understand people's behavior. Her trips included visits to England, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Tangiers, Hawaii, Nassau, Bermuda, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Jean was a loving daughter, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, whose light will always shine in the hearts of her family. Surviving are her five children; Maria Orzel and husband Steve, Scranton, Gus Haas, with whom she resided, David Haas and wife Gail, Peckville, George Haas and wife Sue, Dallas, and Ann Haas, Scranton, five grandchildren; Eric Orzel and Krista Archibald, David Haas, Lindsay Snyder and husband Stephen, and Abigail Haas, six great grandchildren; Evelyn, Stephen, Louis, Kyle, Hayley, Nickelette, and cousins.
