Carl E. Calianno

On Monday, Dec. 13, 2021, Carl E. Calianno, passed peacefully in hospice care after a brief illness. He lost his struggle with life just short of his 96 birthday.
Born in Scranton on Dec. 16, 1925, to the late Alfonso and Antonietta Pica Calianno. Just before graduation from Scranton Tech in 1943, he entered employment with Consolidated Molded Products. Then joined the United States Navy at the age of 18 on Feb. 17, 1944. Involved in WWII, receiving European theater Ribbon (one star), American Theater Ribbon victory Medal, completing his service and was honorably discharged on May 9, 1946. He married the former Claire Marie Serio in 1948. They were married 73 years.
His legacy is in his family, Carl Jr. (Carol), of North Wales, Pa.; Thomas (Cheryl), Alburtis, Pa.; Jane Lupia (Gino), Oldsmar, Fla.; Cathy Voyack (Mark), Old Forge; Joseph (Susan) Severn, Md.; and Grace Williams (Wayne), Throop, Pa. He enjoyed and was loved by his 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Quick with a smile, he was known as a wonderful Italian patriarch that could fix anything. His house is a testimony of that. His kids enjoyed many of those skills/gifts. He worked at Consolidated until it closed in the mid 1970s but continued employment at Atlas Industries until retirement in 1988. After that, as a couple, Carl and Claire remained active in line dancing, with the senior center in their shows and hoagie sales. Most of all, they were there for their children/grandchildren as they were the hub for holidays gatherings of great Italian specialties.
He was brother to Mary Cadden, Concetta Wolfe, Angie Spindler and Antonietta Newbould, Texas. He was preceded in death by all his brothers. John, Dominic, Vito and Joseph, and also preceded in death by grandchildren, Frankie and Diana Voyack.
The family would like to extend special thank you to Pamela, Devin, Desiree, Heather and Ashley for all the loving personal care this past year. Also, Geisinger CMC ER and eighth floor nursing staff. In addition, Hospice of the Sacred Heart as they were amazing in caring for dad in his last days.

Dr. John E. Walsh

Dr. John E. Walsh, 95, a native of Scranton, died Friday after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease in Guthrie Towanda Hospital Skilled Nursing & Rehab. His beloved wife of 65 years is the former Mae E. Farrell. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Wren Walsh. He formerly resided in Clarks Green. He was educated in Scranton public schools and graduated magna cum laude from The University of Scranton. He received his MA degree in history from Lehigh University and his PHD from Teachers College, Columbia University. In addition, he was awarded an honorary L L. D. from The University of Scranton.
John was a veteran of World War ll serving in the Asiatic/Pacific Theatre. An army medic, he served in the first MASH Unit and received a battle star for Okinawa. Also, he was a member of the Army of Occupation in Japan. He was a former member of American Legion Post 966.
Dr. Walsh retired as President and General Manager of WVIA TV/FM, the public broadcasting station of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Prior to that, he was President of ICS and taught in the public schools of Scranton and White Plains, NY. He also taught at The University of Scranton and Marywood University where he was Director of Adult and Continuing Education (PACE).
Dr. Walsh was very active in community affairs serving as the first educator to be President of the Scranton Chamber of Commerce. He was a long-time chairman of the Economic Development Council of Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Private Industry Council of Lackawanna County. John served as chairman of the first Parish Council at the Church of St. Gregory, Clarks Green, where he also was a lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the first Lackawanna County Library Board and served as Secretary of the Scranton Redevelopment Authority. Dr. Walsh was also President of the Alumni Society of The University of Scranton where he also served as Chairman of the Board of Regents. Board memberships included The United Way of Catholic Social Services, Pro Bono, Inc., and St. Francis Kitchen.
While at ICS, Dr. Walsh pioneered many innovations in Independent Studies. He was the author of many studies in non-traditional education and instructional technology.
In addition to his beloved wife, Mae, Dr. Walsh is survived by two daughters; Karyn Paulish and husband Dr. John, Towanda, and Kristen Morahan and husband Kelly, Meshoppen, a sister Judy Duke and husband Paul, Charleston, SC., and four grandchildren; Sean Morahan and partner Katie Weaver, Caitlin Ferrence and husband Elliott, Marissa Fox and husband Joseph, and Megan Paulish, three great grandchildren; Jaxson, Karson and Hudson, of whom he was so proud and was an active and enthusiastic participant in their many sports and activities. His grandchildren reciprocated his loyalty and loved and adored their beloved grandfather.
Due to COVID, the funeral will be private and held at the convenience of the family. A celebration of life will be held in the future. Memorial contributions may be made to WVIA TV, Channel 44 at wvia.org.

Gerald (Jerry) F. Buckley

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Jerry Buckley after an extended illness. He is survived by his devoted wife the former June MCGraw.
Born in Scranton to the late John J. and Sally Blasi Buckley, he was a member of St. Lucy's Church, Scranton. He attended Cathedral Grade School, graduated from Cathedral High School, class of 1964, where he excelled in sports, especially basketball. He was extremely proud of his participation in the successful State Basketball Championship for Cathedral that year. He also attended Lackawanna Junior College where he also was a standout on the basketball team. He was employed by the A&P warehouse before its closure and retired from MAC-TAC Company in South Scranton.
He was an avid sports fan, especially for basketball, but enjoyed watching all sports on tv. While he was a private and humble man, he seemed to make friends and strike up a conversation wherever he went. Always accompanied by the love of his life, June, his happiest times were relaxing at home or being at family gatherings, especially during the holidays.
Beside June, he is survived by his daughter Michele Buckley, Scranton, and his sister Sally Buckley, Scranton, both of whom he loved very much. He is also survived by an aunt, Rose Blasi, several cousins, and other assorted family members.
While he was larger in life in stature, he will be remembered as a deeply religious, gentle, caring, and loving individual to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
The family, especially June, wishes to thank the entire staff of doctors, nurses and other members of Regional Hospital, for the kindness and care given to him during his lengthy stay at the hospital.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the August J. Haas Funeral Home, Inc., 202 Pittston Ave. Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at St. Lucy's Church, 949 Scranton St., at 10 AM celebrated by Rev. Sam Ferretti. All covid protocols are to be followed. Interment is in Cathedral Cemetery.

Patrick Kearney, 70, a resident of South Scranton, died unexpectedly Monday evening at home. His wife of 47 years is the former Patricia Shields. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Frank and Mae G. Daley Kearney. He was a member of Saint John Neumann Parish, was a graduate of both South Scranton Central Catholic High School and Johnson School of Technology. He was employed as an underwriter for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and after his retirement he was employed by Community Bank as a courier. Pat coached South Scranton Little League, was a member of South Scranton Merchants Bowling League for 54 years, and was a member of South Scranton Merchants Golf League. He was the proud owner of the Green Bay Packers, and was an avid fan of the Yankees, NC Tarheels and Riverside Athletics. He also enjoyed his trips to Atlantic City. Pat's greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren. Also surviving are three daughters; Kimberly Ann Higgins and husband Timothy, Moosic, Kelly Saar, Scranton, Erin Heun and husband Ryan, Norristown, his son, Sean Patrick Kearney and wife Jill, Taylor, four grandchildren; Jeffrey, Patrick and Brady Higgins, and Noah Saar, his sister Marita Kearney, Scranton, and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, his best friends; Randy Palko and wife Ann, and Mike Granahan and wife Therese, many nieces and nephews. Thomas F. Butler, Sr., 86, a resident of Scranton, died Sunday morning at home after an illness. His wife of 66 years is the former Ann Powell. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Michael and Rose Rorke Butler. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church where he was deeply involved including being a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the last graduating class of Minooka High School. He was also a graduate of Rutgers University. He was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War where he served aboard the USS Sirago in the submarine service. He was a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3801, Pompton Lakes, NJ., and he was the Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge 1895 in 1989, and he was a board member of the Passaic County Elks Cerebral Palsy Center. He was also a member of the American Legion, Post 171, Fairlawn, NJ. In Scranton, he was the treasurer of AARP Chapter 3731. Tom was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Also surviving are a son Thomas Butler and wife Patricia, Jacksonville, FL., a daughter Patricia Stevens and husband Glen, Frankford, DE., grandchildren; Thomas, Laura and husband Brian, Glen And wife Casey, Eric, and Kelly and husband Phil Lee, great grandchildren; Patrick, Penny, Piper, Calliope, and Giselle, a sister Shirley Adams, a brother Michael Butler and wife Mary, sisters-in-law Charlotte McIntyre and Patricia Harmer, Brothers-in-law Harold Powell and wife Joan, Robert Powell and wife Donna, and John Powell and many nieces and nephews.

Ira A. Biesecker, 99, a resident of the Gino Merli Center, died Saturday in Regional Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, the former Eloise Keesler, who died in 2004. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Ira A. Sr. and Jane Loomis Biesecker. He attended Scranton public schools and he was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Gouldsboro. In his earlier years he drove the trolly and then buses for the Scranton Transit Co. Later, for 30 years, he was employed by Metropolitan Insurance Co. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War ll. In addition to his love of driving, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses of The Gino Merli Center for the compassion given to their dad. Elaine Pilotti Miller, 88, a resident of South Scranton, passed away Tuesday at Moses Taylor Hospital after a brief illness. For 41 years she was married to the love of her life, the late John "Sonny" Miller who died on October 19, 1993. Born in Scranton on April 5, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Celso and Kathleen Norton Pilotti. She was of the Catholic faith and attended Scranton public schools. In 1952, she moved briefly to Syracuse, NY, to work at Remington Arms while her husband served in the Korean War and then moved back to Scranton permanently when he returned from military service. Throughout her marriage and while raising her four children, Elaine was employed by various positions over the years. Elaine was a hard worker and proud of her abilities to take on new challenges and she took on the many new roles with a fervor. Her family and friends would describe Elaine as a "tough cookie" who was strong-willed and very determined. But those who knew her best, saw through her tough exterior and loved her for the kind, loving, and caring person she was. She encountered many struggles and roadblocks in her life, but they only served to make her stronger. Elaine was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother who adored her two grandsons. She loved cooking for family get togethers during the holidays. She loved music, singing and dancing. In her younger years, Elaine and her two sisters, Delores and Laverne, were known as the Pilotti Sisters and were popular in the local area. The sisters won first prize on the Major Bowles Amateur Hour in New York City. She loved her two dogs, Niko and Coco, who gave her great comfort in her senior years. She loved puzzles, word find and watching her favorite TV show, Judge Judy.
Surviving are her son, John Miller, Scranton, and two daughters; Debra Miller, New York City, and Sandra Cerra, Scranton, grandsons Garrett Cerra, Scranton, and Brandon Miller, Allentown, a sister, LaVerne Del Prete, Scranton, and nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her son, David Miller, in 2013, and two brothers; Charles and Joseph Pilotti, and 8 sisters; Eleanor Reina, Mabel Pilotti, Lillian Schnessel, Elizabeth Kochis, Kathryn McArdle, Delores Colangelo and Marlene Pilotti.

Rosemary DeMichele, 80, of Mechanicsburg, was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend with a generous spirit. She died November 5, 2021, surrounded in love by her family at the Hershey Medical Center. Rosemary was married to her loving husband of 58 years, Michael DeMichele, PhD. She was the daughter of the late Ralph and Dora Collini Yantorn of Scranton, PA. She was a lifelong resident of Scranton and a graduate of St. Mary's High School.
Rosemary was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish and the Scranton Century Club. She enjoyed attending mass, cooking for guests, and playing Mahjong and Bridge with friends. Most of all, she loved sharing time with her family. She was a devoted and doting grandmother, and truly embodied the sentiment It's better to give than to receive. There's nothing she enjoyed more than giving her time, energy, and attention to her family and friends, and quite genuinely, to everyone she encountered.
Surviving are her three children: Michael DeMichele, MD, and his wife, Karen Kormis, MD, of Mechanicsburg; Christine Consiglio, Esq, and her husband Michael Consiglio, Esq, of Camp Hill, PA; Jacqueline Kloss, PhD, and her husband, Brian Kloss, Esq, of Radnor, PA; six grandchildren: Sara DeMichele; Michael, Matthew and Julia Consiglio; and Ella and Abby Kloss; her two sisters: Alexandra Yantorn of Clarks Summit and Linda Trently, and her husband Bill Trently of Scranton; brother-in-law, Joseph DeMichele and his wife Carole DeMichele; and nieces and nephews.

Toby M. Lovinger, 75, a resident of Scranton and West Palm Beach, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning in Geisinger CMC. His wife of 47 years is the former Lynne Killiany. Born in Bronx, NY, he was the son of Sadie Roth Lovinger, NJ, and the late Milton Lovinger. He was a graduate of Courtland College and he coached high school sports in New York state. He was self employed as an insurance agent for Nationwide Insurance. Toby was a member of the Ransom Lions Club and he was active with the Blind Association through the Lions Club. Toby was a quiet and unassuming man who enjoyed collecting baseball cards and playing cards with his buddies in Florida. He was an avid New York Yankees fan and enjoyed golf, basketball and swimming in Florida. He was a devoted husband and father. The family wishes to thank first responders and the doctors and nurses at Geisinger CMC and the staff of Fresenius Medical Care. William R. Stahl, 73, of Factoryville and Taylor, died unexpectedly Wednesday in Regional Hospital. His wife of 28 years is the former Pamela Griswold. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Gerard and Ruth Lonsdorf Stahl. He was a member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Church until its closure and then he was a member of St. Mary's Of The Lake and Our Lady Of The Snows parishes. He was a graduate of South Scranton Central High School, and received his bachelor's degree from The University Of Scranton and was studying for his masters at Marywood University. Along with his brothers he co-owned Stall's by Stahl for 47 years and he was employed as a coordinator by St. Michael's School for 47 years. Bill was a fan of race car driving, was an avid world traveler and he enjoyed scuba diving in the islands. He was giving of himself to help the students at St. Michaels. Also surviving are two children; Nicholas Gerard Stahl, Richmond, VA., and Angela Ruth Stahl, Baton Rouge, LA., siblings; Michael Stahl and wife Barbara, Knoxville, TN., Dr. Mary Levick and husband Dr. Donald, Allentown, and Gregory Stahl and wife Rochelle, Roaring Brook Twp., sisters-in-law Elaine Stahl, Scranton, and Natalie Stahl, FL.,13 nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by two brothers; Thomas and James Stahl.

Ann T. Pusateri Radgowski, 95, a resident of South Scranton, died Wednesday morning in Allied Hospice. She was the widow of Stanley Radgowski who died February 4, 1986 and the couple was married for 33 years. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rose Rini Pusateri. She was a member of St. Lucy's Church and formerly was a member of St. Francis Of Assisi Church and Altar Rosary Society until its closure. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and she was a member of Friendly Senior Citizens. Surviving is a daughter Lee Radgowski with whom she resided, a sister Rose Menichetti and husband Joseph, Wallingford, CT., nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a sister Mary Stevens and two brothers; Tony and Peter Pusateri and her stepmother Clementine Romiti Pusateri. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9:30 AM in St. Lucy's Church by Rev. Sam Ferretti, Pastor. Entombment Cathedral Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

Michael J. McLaughlin, 75, a resident of Covington Twp., died unexpectedly Friday evening at home. His wife of 43 years was the late former Barbara Ann Zedar Marzec, who died in 2019.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late William and Erna Phillips McLaughlin. He was a long time member of St Catherine of Siena Church, Moscow. He and his wife worked together for 50 years at Topps, Scranton. Mike was a wonderful husband and father along with being a man of great faith. His passion was caring for his family. He enjoyed spending time with his son and daughter-in-law. Surviving are his son Jude McLaughlin and wife Jessica, Roaring Brook Twp., and a brother William McLaughlin and wife Cheryl, Mountaintop, nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by siblings Marjorie Brock Castanzo, Joseph, Robert and Paul Brock and Patricia Brock Gibson.
A graveside Blessing and Committal Service will be conducted Wednesday at 10 AM in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in the near future.

Susan A. Price Zotynia, 59, a resident of Scranton, died Friday in Geisinger CMC after an illness. Her husband is John Zotynia. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of William Price and the late Angela Teat Price. Her stepmother is Rose Price. Sue was of the Catholic faith and she attended Scranton public schools. She was employed locally as a nurse's aid for many years. She liked the Pittsburgh Steelers and she enjoyed camping. Sue was a caring and loving woman. Also surviving is a daughter Nicole Heil, WV, 6 grandchildren, her sister, Debbie Price, Scranton, two brothers; David Price, Scranton, and William Price and wife Brenda, Pittston, nieces and nephews. Mary M. Buttner, 89, a resident of the East Mountain section of Scranton, died Wednesday morning in Geisinger CMC. She was the widow of Frederick H. Buttner who died September 19, 2018, and the couple were married for 58 years. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Christopher and Madeline Keuhner Kearney. She was a member of Holy Name Of Jesus Church, St. John Neumann Parish. She attended Scranton public schools. Mary will always be remembered for her love of goodies, especially candy, cookies, and cakes. She always shared theses treats with everyone who stopped by her home for a visit. She especially loved children, and many of the children in her neighborhood referred to her as Aunt Mary. She also loved playing her word find games. Mary always treated everyone with love and respect and saw the good in people. Mary and her husband Fred worked very hard to instill these values in their two sons. Mary had a deep belief in God's guiding hand throughout her life. The family would like to thank the following: Dr. Richard Martin, Dr. Jeffery Powell, nurses and staff at Geisinger CMC and Geisinger 65 Forward for their excellent care and compassion extended to Mary throughout her life. Also, thanks to GCMC nurses; Candace, Amy, Abby, and others on fourth floor in the Progressive Care Unit, and to the many doctors who provided care. Also, thanks to Mary's caregivers; Susann Waltke and Florence Birtell. Surviving are her two sons; Frederick G. Buttner and wife Linda, and Paul C. Buttner, with whom she resided, all of Scranton, nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her brothers; Christopher, William, Edward, Richard, Robert, Paul, Lawrence and Joseph Kearney and her sister Madeline DeLayo. According to Mary's wishes, her funeral will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Dennis Charles Amato, a resident of Moscow, recently turned 74, passed away September 23, 2021, at home after a long illness. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Joseph and Helen Mazur Amato. He was raised in the South Side of Scranton. He attended Scranton public schools and he was of the Catholic faith. His final moments were spent in his home with his son and daughter by his side. He will be sadly missed by so many friends and family. He resided in Moscow for 46 years where the doors to his beautiful home were always open. His nickname "D" was derived from a restaurant that he owned called Mr. D's. D was mostly known for his generosity, silly little jokes, down to earth spirit and a love for his family. His most notable achievements include real estate investments and his family association with A&A Auto and Keystone Automotive.
Dennis is survived by his children; Scot Amato, with whom he resided and Michelle Amato, Scranton, as well as his former wife, Ada Amato. His siblings include Barbara Kimmick, Clarks Summit, Joseph Amato and wife Andrea, Moosic, and Peter Amato, Waverly, many nieces and nephews.
A private Blessing Service will be conducted by Msg. Joseph Quinn at the August J. Haas Funeral Home, Inc., where D will be surrounded by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to his favorite charity, Keystone Mission, 8 West Olive St., Scranton, 18508.

Bruce W. Ladd, 74, a resident of Scranton, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2021, due to complications of Covid-19. He was married June 17, 2006 to the former Linda Sandruwicz. The couple were married for 15 wonderful years. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Carl U. and Dorothy Cassidy Ladd. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, class of '66. Upon graduation, Bruce enlisted in the army with the rank of E-4, Army cook in a military brig during the Vietnam Era. After his discharge, he became a truck driver for many automotive supply companies including Central Warehouse, Sunshine Auto, Monroe Muffler, and he retired in 2009 from A&A Auto Parts. He was of the Catholic faith and was a member of the former St. John the Evangelist Church in South Scranton. Throughout his life, Bruce grew a great love of working on cars. He was known as the "Chevy Man" and he spent many hours getting ready for car shows in his 1955 Chevy Belaire. He won many, many trophies. In addition to his wife, Linda, he is survived by a stepdaughter, Nicole (Chris) Hemingway, Scranton, five grandchildren; Ashur Joseph, Soleria Grace, Maxis Alexander, Faclyn Bruce and Rowan Jayce, all of Scranton. He leaves behind many friends. The funeral will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Jerome William Lynott died peacefully at the age of 91 (or 91 1/2 as he said) on Sept. 20 in hospice care.
A lifelong resident of Scranton, he lived a full life as a loving and devoted husband, patient and supportive father and a proud grandfather.
He was baptized in the Cathedral of St. Peter, Scranton on Jan. 12, 1930 and will be buried from the same church on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, attaining the rank of sergeant during the Korean War and worked in the construction industry as an estimator, retiring from Sordoni Construction. He was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, attended the University of Scranton and Villanova University. He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Hortense Scanlan Lynott, a son Atty. Daniel Lynott of Tampa, FL and brothers John and Joseph Lynott and sister Hortense Mundy.
He and his wife, Romaine Spindler Lynott, celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on Feb. 16. In addition to his wife, he is survived by children: Atty. Michael Lynott and wife Laura, Miami, FL; Jerome Lynott and wife Jean, Nicholson Township; Mary Gan and husband Dr. Robert, Honesdale; Kathryn Brubaker and husband, David, Sinking Springs; Atty. Karl Lynott and wife Sarellen, Scranton; and Atty. Kurt Lynott and wife Casie, Olyphant; grandchildren Dr. Stephen, Alicia and Anastasia Gan; Tara and Kathleen Lynott; Allison and husband Matthew Baker and Isabelle Lynott; Harris and Hunter Lynott; Sarah Lynott; U.S. Army Lt. Michael, Julie, James, Daniel and Mary Grace Brubaker; and Maddy Lynott.

Cindy was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and she was formerly employed as a nurse's aid for Allied and Interim Health. Thomas F. Noto lll, 68, a resident of Ransom Twp., died Friday morning in Hospice of The Sacred Heart, Dunmore, after a brief illness. His wife of 41 years is the former Paula Polentz. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Thomas F. Jr. and Gloria Soloski Noto. He was a graduate of South Scranton Central Catholic High School, class of 1971, and Johnson School of Technology, class of 1974, receiving his degree in welding. He was employed by Floserve Corporation until his retirement on August 31, 2018. In his younger years he enjoyed traveling to Alaska and Colorado where he bagged his trophy mounts of caribou and elk, respectively. Recently, he and his wife purchased electric bikes and a pontoon boat for boating on Lake Wallenpaupack. Most of all, he enjoyed scuba diving, and after 20 years, he fulfilled his dream of a shark dive and he made it happen at Stuart's Cove Shark Diving in the Bahamas, where he actually found a reef shark tooth and mounted it into a pendant. Tom's personality and jokes were always the life of the party, these will always be with us to cherish. He was always the first to help anyone, even a stranger. The family gives a special shout out and "Thank You" to Sara Valvonis and the wonderful staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, for the wonderful care beyond and above in Tom's last days. Also surviving are his two sisters; Chrissie Yarem and husband John, Moosic, Karen Liptock and husband Larry, Dalton, a sister-in-law, Susan Burke and companion Bill Sincavage, Scranton, nephews; Larry Liptock, Jr., J.T. Yarem, Pat and Daniel Burke, nieces; Casandra Mazzie, Dr. Kristen Liptock, and Elizabeth Straub, numerous grand nieces and grand nephews, and special friends "who knew who they were". Paul Walsh, 61, of Scranton, died peacefully Friday, September 3 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital after an illness. He was the son of the late Paul and Loretta Coco Walsh. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Marie, his two daughters, Talia and Breena, and brother John.
Paul was a 1978 graduate of Scranton Technical High School and later pursued a career in criminal justice, graduating from Lackawanna College Police Academy. He served as a patrol officer for the city of Scranton for 12 years and remained an active member of the FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) E.B. Jermyn Lodge 002. During his retirement he enjoyed reading, writing and listening to Frank Andrews on WILK. He loved the Philadelphia Phillies and the Eagles. The funeral will be private for the immediate family and there will be no calling hours, as were Paul's wishes.

Sarah (Sally) Phillips Scholz, 88, a resident of South Scranton, died Wednesday morning in Dunmore Health Care Center. She was the widow of Fred Scholz who died in 2014. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Sarah Lance Quinn. She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, class of 1951. She presently was a member of St. Peter's Cathedral and she was a member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Church until its closure. She graduated from beauty school and for 68 years she owned and operated Sally's Beauty Shoppe in South Scranton. Her customers wound up being her best friends. Sally was a member of Scranton Singers Guild and in 1939, she conducted the only all girl orchestra in Scranton. Sally loved and was loved. The family wishes to thank the staff of Dunmore Health Care Center for their compassion and care of Sally. Surviving are her children; Nancy Zumchak and husband Gregory, Dallas, Karen Lally and husband Paul, Cary, NC, Mari Cummings and husband Tom, and Jane Grzenda, all of Scranton, Jacqueline Samsell and husband Joseph, Moscow, and John Phillips Jr. and wife Michele, Scranton, 13 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Gerard (Jerry) Burke, a resident of Scranton, died Saturday morning in Hospice Of The Sacred Heart, Dunmore. His wife of 65 years is the former Jane Ann Phillips. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Harry and Edna Neureiter Burke. He was a member of St. John Neumann Parish where he was a senior acolyte for many years, and was a graduate of Scranton Central High School. Until his retirement, he was employed for 35 years as a mail carrier for the Post Office. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was a US Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. Jerry played professional baseball with the Milwaukee Braves and he also played with the House of David. He coached baseball and basketball at St. Patrick's and then coached both sports at Cathedral and he led Bishop Hannon to a state championship in basketball in 1973. He then coached basketball at Abington Heights where he ended his coaching career. He was a PIAA football official for 40 years and a baseball and basketball official for many years. He was the clubhouse manager for the Red Barons. He loved watching all sports on TV. Jerry attended as many sporting events as he possibly could for his children and grandchildren and he was their biggest fan and supporter. He was a member of the PA Sports Hall of Fame. He achieved many awards throughout his lifetime. Jerry was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Also surviving are a son Jerry Burke and wife Sue, Clarks Summit, a daughter Eileen Notarianni and husband Jimmy, Scranton, 7 grandchildren, one stepgrandchild, six great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren, sister-in-law Angela Burke, and nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his son Timothy, and two brothers Donald and Paul Burke. The family wishes to thank the Hospice of the Sacred Heart for all the care and compassion given to Jerry. Paul J. Gilroy, 89, a resident of South Scranton, died Wednesday afternoon in Allied Hospice. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Durkin Gilroy. He was a member of St. John Neumann Parish and he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. While in high school, Paul also attended The University Of Scranton for three years. His lifetime career was as a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 229, where he began his career in 1949 and retired as Executive Administrator in 1985. The family expresses special appreciation to the doctors and staff of Allied Services Hospice for the loving and compassionate care given to Paul. Surviving is a sister, Mary Parry, nieces and nephews, and loving special friends. He was also preceded in death by a brother and his wife, John and Loretta Gilroy, and a brother-in-law, Al Parry. James ( Tony ) Dougherty, 61, a resident of Scranton, died Monday morning in Regional Hospital after an illness. His wife of 41 years is the former Phyllis Lefchak. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late James and Ann Marie Gentile Dougherty. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and prior to his retirement, he was employed as a supervisor for Specialty Records/WEA and Men's Wearhouse Distribution Center. He was the ultimate Pittsburgh Steelers fan and he collected sportscards. Tony enjoyed 70s music, family dinners and vacations at the shore. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life. He will forever be their loving "Peepa". Also surviving are his daughters; Jamie Pugliese and husband Robert lll, Scranton, Jessica Dougherty, Philadelphia, and his son Daniel Dougherty, Scranton, grandchildren Henley and Robert lV Pugliese, and a future grandchild due in November. Nicholas R. (Bobby) Beadle, 81, a resident of Jefferson Twp., formerly of South Scranton, died Friday afternoon in Regional Hospital. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Nicholas F. and Mary Bakaysa Beadle. His wife of 28 years, the former Mary A. Mackreth preceded him in death. He was a member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Church until its closure and was employed there as a custodian for over 20 years. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School. He was self employed as a contractor and also worked for RCA Thompson. He was a Vietnam veteran serving both in the US Army and as Petty Officer 2nd Class in the US Navy. Bobby was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His grandchildren were his life. He was proud of both his military service and his St. Mary's close parish family. Bobby was the go to guy, he possessed a natural ability to solve any problem. The family wishes to thank the VA Medical Center and the staff of Regional Hospital for all the care and compassion given to Bobby. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Horace Vincent and Mary Jacqueline Thomas Vanvestraut. She was a member of Our Lady Of The Snows Church, Clarks Summit, and she was a graduate of Riverside High School, Class of 1976. Prior to her illness, she was employed for 25 years as a nurse's aid and therapy aid at the Jewish Home Of Eastern Pa. She loved working with the elderly in the therapy department. Kathy had many joys in life; music, playing guitar, writing stories, poems and music. She also loved painting and playing games with her family. She was a lifelong Yankees fan. God granted her the gift of strength and laughter she shared with many. Kathy cherished time spent with her niece and nephews. Reverend Joseph O. Weber, Pastor Emeritus of St. Frances Cabrini, Carverton, died on the 22nd day of June 2021 at Marywood Heights, Scranton (formerly Holy Family Residence), after having faithfully served the Diocese of Scranton for sixty-four years.
Father Weber, son of the late Joseph A. and Anna M. (Hogan) Weber, was born in Scranton on November 24, 1931. He received his early education at St. Mary of the Assumption, Scranton. Father entered The Pontifical College Josephinum where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in philosophy and completed his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 25, 1957 by the Most Reverend Amleto G. Cicognani. For the first eighteen years of his priesthood, Father Weber taught college-level courses at the Josephinum. Father served as an assistant pastor at St. Luke's, Jersey Shore; Christ the King, Dunmore; Immaculate Conception, Scranton; and St. Mary's Assumption, Scranton. He was assigned to his first pastorate at Sacred Heart of Jesus, Weston in 1974. In 1977 he was appointed pastor at St. Patrick, Milford and in 1981, was appointed pastor at Good Shepherd, Drums, where he served for 10 years. In 1991 Father was appointed pastor at St. Catherine, Moscow. In 1994, he was appointed pastor at St. Frances X. Cabrini, Carverton where he served for 13 years until his retirement and appointment as Pastor Emeritus in 2007. In addition to his parochial duties, Father served as Program Director at Camp St. Andrew in 1957; Chaplain at Marywood Novitiate from 1968 to 1971; as a member of the Diocesan Advisory Board of the Office for Continuing Education of Priests from 1990 to 1993 and again from 2001 to 2004; and on the Diocesan Liturgical Commission from 2005 to 2006.
Father celebrated the 60th Anniversary of his Ordination with a Pontifical Mass Celebrated by Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L. in 2016.
Father is survived by nieces, Donna and Michelle, a nephew, Anthony, cousins and dear friend, Sister Rose Marie Mozzachio.
Father was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Cognetti and infant sister, Ann.
Viewing will take place Thursday, July 1, 2021 at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Scranton at 9:00 a.m. preceding the funeral.
A Pontifical Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Scranton, on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Scranton. Interment will be in St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

Cheryl A. Gavern, 55, a resident of Scranton, died Wednesday morning in Geisinger Wyoming Valley. Her husband of 35 years is James Gavern III.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary D. Walsh Tucker. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. She was a local antique dealer for many years. Cheryl was huge animal lover, a great cook and baker, enjoyed the jewelry channel, and deeply loved her husband and son.
Also surviving are her son, James Gavern IV and partner, William Lewis, Wilkes-Barre; her sister, Patricia Reveillo, Scranton; three brothers, William Tucker, Scranton, Patrick Tucker, Tobyhanna, and Joseph Tucker and wife, Cheryl, Arkansas; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Daniel Tucker.

He was an avid bowler, enjoyed riding his motorcycle and loved playing pool with his children. Bruce was a loving husband, father, brother and uncle who loved his family with all his heart. Ann Marie Riggi-Hopkins, Scranton left the world to be with her lord on May 21, 2021. Born Dec. 17, 1969, she was the daughter of the late Joseph John Riggi and Delores Kerekes Riggi, Dunmore.
Ann Marie was married to Kelly Hopkins of Scranton. She was a 1988 graduate of Dunmore High School and worked as a clerk for the Dunmore Borough before working for the City of Scranton.
Ann Marie's love of dance blossomed and she became a certified ball room dance instructor for the Author Murray Dance Studio. She played a dual role as a mother and grandmother to her son Thomas Harrison Jr., Baylee Ferguson and Thomas Harrison III. Because of her love, they flourished in her care.
Ann Marie was proceeded in death by her daughter Miranda Lee Ferguson, brother Stephen Riggi and her parents. Surviving are her husband Kelly Hopkins, son Thomas Harrison Jr., granddaughter Baylee Ferguson, grandson Thomas Harrison III, brothers; Joseph, Nicholas, William and Mark, sisters; Mary Ann Capone, Kathryn Coolican, and Delores Sedock.

Lawrence P. Fisk, 67, a resident of South Scranton, passed away Sunday night in Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, after a three year battle with cancer. Born in Scranton, he was the son of Mary Teot Fisk, Scranton, and the late Isaac (Ike) Fisk. Larry was his Mom's primary caregiver for many years and saw to it that her every need was met. He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church until its closure and was presently a member of St. John Neumann Parish. Larry was strongly devoted to his Catholic faith. Larry was a 1971 graduate of South Catholic High School and received his degree in drafting from Johnson School of Technology. Until his retirement in 2020, he spent 45 years in the food industry, including 35 years with Sysco Foods where he received numerous sales awards. He was loyal to his customers,often going above and beyond to meet their needs. Larry was a dedicated member of the YMCA Men's Fitness Center where he enjoyed the camaraderie of friends as well as fitness training for many years. He also was a member of the 415 Running Club where he developed many long lasting friendships. Larry enjoyed oldies music and he was a loyal fan of the New York Yankees, LA Lakers and LA Rams, and enjoyed watching college football every fall season. Larry was an animal lover and supported many animal rights causes throughout the years. The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their outstanding care of Larry. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Albert and Genevieve Foy Boos. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church and was a graduate of St. Mary's High School. He was formerly employed by Capitol Records and Topps Chewing Gum, and St. Mary's Elementary School and after his retirement, he was employed in the maintenance department of The University Of Scranton. He was an army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Jack was a loving husband and father and he enjoyed being with his children and family. James M. Kerrigan, 88, a South Scranton resident, passed away peacefully Friday at the home of his daughter, surrounded by his loving family. His late wife was the former Elizabeth Dougherty, who passed away in 2011. The couple was married for 54 years.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late James and Marjorie Kearney Kerrigan. He was a member of St. John Neumann Parish where he was a Eucharistic Minister, Boy Scoutmaster and potato pancake chef for 28 years for the annual parish festival. He was a member of the Parish Life organization and was treasurer for Pennsylvanians for Human Life. He was a graduate of Scranton Central High School. He was employed by the Post Office for 41 years, played softball for their team, and was a member of the NALCarriers union.
Jim was an avid Dodgers and Notre Dame fan. Pop was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He always sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" to all his grandchildren as he pushed them on the swing.
Surviving are four daughters, Mary Singleton and husband, Dave, Scranton; Julie Durand and husband, Reed, Owego, N.Y.; Betty McGlynn and husband, Don, Maine, N.Y.; and Michele Sekol and husband, Matt, Hanover Twp.; a son, Joseph Kerrigan, Old Forge; grandchildren, Courtney Keenan and husband, Edd; Kathryn Hughes and husband, Shawn; Sarah and Jessica Singleton; Iain, Evan and Caelan Kerrigan; Andrew Durand and wife, Gretchen; Johnathan, Cathy, Susan, Caroline, Thomas, Laura, Samuel and Abigail Durand; Pat McGlynn; Amber Smith and husband, Dan; and Faith and Logan Sekol; a sister, Margie Mazaleski and husband, Edward, Taylor; three brothers, Jack, Moosic; Robert, Scranton, and Thomas, Clarks Green; nieces and nephews.

Eugene F. Killiany, 73, a resident of Scranton, passed away Wednesday at Regional Hospital after a courageous battle with dementia and Parkinson's Complex. His wife of 47 years is the former Nancy Curcio. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Michael Killiany and Elizabeth Mayorchalk Moran. He was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Parish. Until its closure, he was a member of St. Francis Of Assisi Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister and CCD teacher. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1965, Keystone Junior College, Class of 1971, The University Of Scranton, Bachelor's degree, Class of 1973, and also his Master's degree in 1978. A United States Navy veteran, he was a hospital corpsman during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1968. He was employed as a math teacher at Lackawanna Trail High School and for 35 years he was employed by the Scranton School District. He was also an adjunct professor at Penn State and Marywood College. He was a member of PSEA, PSERS, SFT, American Legion Post 920, the Tauras Club and the 20th Ward Social and Athletic Club. Gene was patient, tolerant, and generous with a great sense of humor and a quick wit. He was an animal lover who rescued senior dogs for over 45 years. He was a loving husband, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend. Gene possessed a strong work ethic, loved to travel, was proud of his Hungarian roots and he was thrilled to visit Hungary. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses of Regional Hospital for their kind and compassionate care of Gene. A special thank you to Crimsin Kern who was like a niece to him. Pauline A. Long, 93, a South Scranton resident, passed away peacefully Tuesday at home. She was the widow of Robert Long who died on June 1, 2003. The couple were married for 54 years. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Grace Salamida Dorio. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish until its closure, later she became a member of St. Paul of the Cross Parish. She was educated in Scranton public schools and was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. She was employed for over 50 years by Sauquoit Industries until her retirement in 1993. She enjoyed traveling with her friends, cooking traditional Italian foods and enjoying a variety of homemade desserts. She was continuously learning, enjoying playing bingo, eating out at various restaurants and church picnics, and appreciating nature while spending time with her family. The family would like to thank the medical and administrative staffs at Prime Medical Group, Geisinger CMC, Commonwealth Home Health, and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their compassionate care. Surviving are two sons; Robert Long, Jr., with whom she resided, and William Long and wife Mary, Wayne, grandchildren Matthew, Katherine and Brian Long, her sister, Theresa Haefele and husband Ed, Scranton, nieces and nephews. Arlington (Sonny) J. Phillips, Jr., a South Scranton resident, passed away Friday at the Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center. He was the husband of the former Constance Korpan who died in 2012. Born in Scranton, September 25, 1930, he was the son of the late Arlington J. and Theresa Puhl Phillips. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish and was a graduate of St. Mary of the Assumption High School. He enlisted in the army in September 1948. He completed basic training at Fort Sill, OK, where he received radio operation training. After Basic Training, he was assigned to the 69th Chemical Smoke Generator Company at Army Chemical Center in Maryland, then reassigned to the 2nd Chemical Mortar Battalion which was in the process of being formed.
In September 1950, the battalion was sent to Korea where he was assigned as a forward observer radio operator for "A" company. He was wounded on November 1st when overrun by North Koreans and Red China forces in the Battle of Unsan. After returning to the states, he was assigned to Fort Knox, KY as a radio installer in tanks. After being reassigned to the 53rd AAA Brigade at Swarthmore College, PA, he was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal on June 13, 1952. He received the Purple Heart medal, the Korean Combat medal, the Korean Campaign medal with silver battle star and the Good Conduct medal.
Arlington and Connie married in 1954 after meeting at PP&L where they both worked and were married for 58 years before Connie's death in 2012. Arlington worked for Scranton Electric Company and PP&L Electric for 40 years as a linesman 1st class and crew leader until his retirement in October 1992.
Arlington was active in volunteerism and received the PP&L Community Betterment Award. He helped organize the Keyser Valley Boy Scout Troop #34 where he served as Scout Master. Later he transferred to Troop #42 at St. Mary's Church where he served 30 years as Assistant Scout Master. He has two sons, James and Michael, who became Eagle Scouts. He was a member and president of the Bishop Klonowski High School Father's Club. In addition, for many years he was an usher and adult altar server at St. Mary's. He was also a fourth degree member of the Knights Of Columbus.
Arlington received the Scranton School District Teacher's "Friends of Education" award, the American Legion Department Volunteer of the Year, and a Red Cross plaque for donating 10 gallons of blood. He was the Purple Heart Department and VAVS Chairman for the Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center where he was also a member of the Advisory Council and a volunteer for numerous years since the day the center opened. He was a member of the American Legion and served as Commander of Post 948 from 1976 to 1979 and District 11 from 1983 to 1985. He was also Vice Commander of the Legion Department of PA from 1990 to 1991 as well as a member of the VFW and DAV. Arlington was an avid hunter and Boston Red Sox fan.
Surviving are his children: daughter Ann Harrington and husband Ed, Scranton; son James Phillips and wife Christine, Pittsburgh; son Michael Phillips and partner Patricia Jackloski, Nanticoke; and daughter Beth Orr, Scranton. He was also the proud grandfather of Jamie Snyder and husband Ryan, Nathaniel Phillips and wife Marjorie, Nicholas and Nicole Phillips, Eamonn Orr, and Riley Orr and fiance Kris Lepka. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law Michael Orr.

Elizabeth (Betty) J. Kull, 94, an East Mountain resident, died Wednesday in The Gardens Of Tunkhannock. She was born October 21, 1927 to the late Edward and Helen Spitzer Rosen. She married Henry J. Kull on September 23, 1950, 63 wonderful years together until his death on November 11, 2013. Hank and Betty traveled many countries and many cruises, the highlight being the renewal of their 50th anniversary vows at Cana in the Holy Land. She graduated from St. Mary of the Assumption High School and attended Lackawanna Business College. She worked for the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. for 30 years as a secretary, retired as a stock auditor. She enjoyed swimming and exercising at the "Y". Betty loved golf, playing in several leagues, AARP Women's League and the Golden Girls. She won three championships in her younger years. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish for over 80 years until its closure. Currently she was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish. She is survived by a brother, Joseph Gerard Rosen and wife Geraldine Roche Rosen, Egg Harbor Twp., NJ, and nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Tuesday at 9:30 AM from the August J. Cheryl M. Petroski, a Scranton resident, passed away unexpectedly Monday at home. Her husband of 23 years is Steven Petroski. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Louise Miller Palmiter. She was a graduate of Stanton High School, Maine. She was employed locally until her disability. Cheryl was a spiritual woman, a dedicated wife, and a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was very trustworthy and always spoke the truth. She enjoyed the outdoors and camping, especially sitting around the campfire with her grandchildren. Also surviving are two daughters; Kimberly Smith and companion Don Brennan and Tonya Smith, all of Scranton, a son John Smith and wife Tina, Falls, two sisters; Carol Sitez and husband Charles, AL., Linda Meade, Taylor, and three brothers; Jerry Palmiter and William Palmiter, OK., and David Palmiter and wife Rose, Peckville, grandchildren; Ann, Cole, Logan, Ron and wife Brie, Dean, William, Khrystia, CiGi, Justin, Jessica, Tiffany and John lll, great grandchildren; Gabriella, Olivia and Aaron, nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her son William Price lV, and her grandson Ryan Clarkson, two sisters, Nancy Palmiter and Ginger Palmiter and five brothers; Doug, Craig, Ronald and Arthur Palmiter and William Russell. A Funeral Service will be conducted Monday at 7 PM by the Rev. Jack Munley in the August J. Haas Funeral Home, Inc., 202 Pittston Ave. Friends may call Monday from 5 to 7 PM.

Ann M. Lipperini, South Scranton, passed away Tuesday, March 23rd. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, in 1994. They shared 46 years of marriage, and in the final year of his life, Ann took care of Joe full time at home during his illness. Born in Scranton, daughter of Joseph Bunevicius and Anna Balynas, Ann was one of eleven children, eight of whom predeceased her.
Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Ploskonka (Joseph), Churchville, MD; three sons, Richard (Irene), Toms River, NJ; Michael (Ann) Moosic; Neil (Patricia) Collingswood, NJ; a sister, Gertrude Sarokas, Scranton; a brother, Peter R. Bunevitch (Evelyn); 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Ann devoted her life to family, faith and service to others. In addition to raising her four children with Joe, and cherishing every moment with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Ann was a longtime member of St. Paul of the Cross Parish, and before that, St Francis of Assisi in South Scranton, where she was involved in numerous church activities and committees. For many years, she also volunteered her time for charity work in the local area.
The viewing will be held Saturday, March 27th, 8:00-9:30 a.m., at the August J. Haas Funeral Home, Inc., 202 Pittston Ave, Scranton, to be followed by 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, St. Paul of the cross Parish, 1217 Prospect Ave., 1217 Prospect Ave., Scranton, PA 18505. Interment will be at the Italian-American Cemetery in Minooka.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Oakwood Terrace, Moosic, for the loving care they provided Ann, and accommodations made to her family, especially this past year. Joseph J. Quinlan, 84, a resident of South Scranton, died Tuesday evening in Hospice Of The Sacred Heart, Dunmore. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Joseph J. Sr., and Christine Schmidt Quinlan. He attended St. Mary's High School and received his Associate's Degree in Business Administration from Penn State University. Joe had a varied career in many fields including plumbing, mechanics, bus driver and employee of ARC. He was a friend of Bill W. and was proud of his 40 year affiliation. Surviving are his children; daughter Kim Lovell, Scranton, Joseph Quinlan and wife Ruth, Cheswick, Patrick Quinlan and wife Marie, Silver Springs, MD, James Quinlan and fiancee Donna Karwaski, Scranton, and Ann Marie Locker and husband Ken, Scranton, 11 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by two sisters; Elizabeth Mikolayczak and Marion Nunn, and an infant brother John J. Quinlan. Martin C. Dorio, Sr.

Marty Dorio, Sr., a life-long resident of South Scranton, passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness while courageously battling cancer. He is survived by Marianne Walsh Dorio, his beloved wife of 41 glorious years.
Born in Scranton on December 24, 1949, Marty was the son of Irene Gulf Dorio, Scranton, and the late Martin A. Dorio. As a devoted Catholic and member of St. Paul of the Cross Parish, his faith carried him throughout life. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1967, and earned his associates degree in Drafting and Design from Johnson School of Technology. Marty was a member of the Army National Guard, 109th Infantry, 2nd Battalion. He was employed for 36 years by Allstate Insurance Company as an auto insurance adjuster, where he cultivated many personal and professional relationships throughout the area. Seeking to bring more joy to others, he also founded Ballooney Toons, a family-owned balloon business with his wife. Upon his retirement from Allstate, he eagerly pursued his most coveted role as co-babysitter to his beloved granddaughters.
Marty was a man of many talents. His keen attention to detail lead him to excellence in all of his endeavors. Whether restoring vehicles for family and friends, or remodeling homes of those he cared about, going the extra mile was customary. Marty was humble in regards to his craft, but his projects were nothing short of spectacular. He demonstrated the utmost patience with tedious tasks and commonly referred to them as therapy. Marty was committed to lightening the load of others while generously sharing his skillset for his family's benefit.
Marty's easy going personality combined with his quick wit and humor brought balance to any situation. He held steadfast to a "don't worry be happy" philosophy and inspired positive sentiments. Anyone who entered his home never knew if they were going to be on the receiving end of a side-splitting one liner, signature cocktail, or kitchen dance party.
Marty's love for his family was immeasurable. He was a dedicated husband, adoring father, and playful grandfather. Marianne was the love of his life whom he supported and helped with anything life threw their way. Together they created a nurturing home where they celebrated all of life’s milestones. He cherished little footsteps, dried tears, reveled in laughter, and taught endless lessons. His words of wisdom will forever echo in the hearts of his family.
Marty was one of the most genuine people you could have ever met. He deferred talking about himself, and loved to hear what you had to say. A fabulous listener, he remembered everyone's story and valued every conversation. Marty was often soft-spoken, but always insightful. The positivity of his character resonated with each word. Your day, your life, and your family mattered to him. His warmth and his charisma were magnetic; he truly was everyone's "Bud".
Marty is also survived by his children; son Martin C. Dorio, Jr., and wife Marina, Dunmore, daughter Amanda Cooney and husband Brian, Media, and son Michael Dorio, Sterling Heights, MI, granddaughters; Emelina, Lucy, and Francine Dorio, a brother Joseph Dorio, Scranton, and numerous family and friends.
The funeral will be Thursday at 10:30 AM from the August J. Haas Funeral Home, 202 Pittston Ave., with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in St. Ann's Basilica, 1250 St. Ann's St., to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Burke, CP. Interment St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM. Due to Covid 19, masks must be worn and social distancing will be practiced.

Joan I. Ewaskiw, 78, a resident of Scranton, died Thursday evening in Timber Ridge Health Care Center after battling a long, brave fight with cancer. She was the wife of Robert Ewaskiw. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Dominick and Elizabeth Lockner Taddonio. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and she was a member of St. Mary Of The Assumption Church until its closure. Presently, she was a member of St. John Neumann Parish. Prior to becoming a stay at home mom, she was employed at Owens Illinois-Kimbell Division. Joan loved spending time with her granddaughter and she enjoyed nature and being outdoors every chance she could. Also surviving is her daughter Lynn Ewaskiw-Gordon and husband Robert, and granddaughter Emily Gordon, all of Spring Brook Twp., a brother Thomas Taddonio and wife Marilyn, Scranton, a Niece, Laurie Taddonio, and a nephew, Ken Taddonio and son Chase Taddonio. The family would like to thank the kind and caring staff at Timber Ridge Health Care Center as well as the staff of Hospice Of The Sacred Heart. Peter White, a South Scranton resident, passed away February 24 at Regional Hospital.
Born in Scranton, Pa, on March 27, 1956, he was the son of the late Jack and Libby (Elizabeth Egan) White. He was a graduate of Bishop Klonowski High School and The University Of Scranton. Until his retirement, he was employed as a social worker at the Lackawanna County Prison.
Pete was an avid reader and movie buff. He was especially close to his great nieces and nephews who looked forward to his daily visits to play their favorite board games. Sunday morning breaksfast was not complete until "Uncle Pete" arrived with the doughnuts. Peter was a gift to his family. His quiet presence and dry sense of humor will be forever missed.
He is survived by his sister, Susan Kochis and husband Stephen, brother-in-law David Hatfield and a sister-in-law Marilyn White, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sisters Trudy Hatfield and Betsey Rieder and his brother Damian White.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 801 Taylor Ave., on Tuesday, March 2, at 10 AM to be celebrated by Rev. Patrick J. McLaughlin, Pastor. Masks and social distancing will be required. Interment private at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made in Peter's name to St. Joseph's Center, 2010 Adams Ave., 18509.

Ethel Gatelli

Ethel Gatelli, a South Scranton resident, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2021. She was the widow of the late Joseph M. Gatelli. Born in Scranton, Pa., on April 9, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Liborio and Clara Pipczymski Tornambe. A graduate of Scranton Technical High School, in her youth she loved to dance, especially Tap, and was the "life of the party". She was a member of St. Francis Of Assisi Church and its Altar and Rosary Society until its closure where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and volunteered at many annual homemade macaroni dinners.
Affectionally known as Bebe, her love for her family was unconditional. She was very compassionate, an excellent listener and wise counselor to family and friends, providing strong support when it was most needed. Ethel had an abiding faith in God and a strong belief in the afterlife. She daily prayed the rosary including with a group of friends at Allied Terrace where she lived happily for over five years.
Ethel cared deeply for her siblings, especially her sister, Frances, sharing a home for 17 years. She revered her parents, lovingly caring for them through their golden years. She was a humble person who did not forget "where she came from", living by the Golden Rule, treating others as she wanted to be treated. Ethel "turned the other cheek" and did not hold grudges.
Surviving are her sons: Joseph (Judy), Scranton, and Robert (Ginnie), Toms River, NJ, a sister Frances Paranich, grandson Matthew, granddaughters Dawn Maria and Jeana, great grandchildren; Joseph, Amelia and Jacob, several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her beloved brothers Paul Tornambe and Matthew Tornambe.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Thomas Minora and Mountainview Care Center for their patient, kind, and compassionate care provided to our Mother, especially during this pandemic when their touch had to replace ours.

Olympia Ferrara, 84 a South Scranton resident, died Tuesday at home after an illness. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Reina Spinuzza. She was of the Catholic faith and she was a graduate of Dunmore High School. Olympia was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mom's loving kindness extended beyond her family and friends to everyone she met. She loved to cook, and as her good friend Msgr. John Esseff said "she loved to serve." My sister Marguerite and I knew without a doubt that we were loved unconditionally. A tremendous love she gave us her entire life. Growing up, she extended that to all our friends with open arms and an open house. I spent my life watching mom give to others and help people in need, sometimes literally strangers on the street. I often heard her share her devotion for Jesus, Mother Mary and Padre Pio.
Mom lived in Sicily for a few years. She volunteered at a shelter for troubled women run by Mother Theresa's sisters, helping and serving for over a year. She often told stories of her time there and described it as one of the best years of her life.
In mom's later years her passion was for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They had the blessing to experience a love like no other.
I don't think mom ever realized just how many lives she touched with her kindness. We do know, and she will be forever in our hearts.
Surviving are two daughters; Maria Flynn and husband Sean, with whom she resided, and Marguerite Capri, Largo Florida, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A celebration of Olympia's life will be held at a future date in the Fireside Martini Grill, 411 Chestnut St. Dunmore. The funeral is private and held at the convenience of the family.

Tony (Anthony) Blasi, 72, a resident of Scranton, died Sunday in Regional Hospital due to complications of Covid 19. His wife of 46 years is Ann Marie (Gattens) Blasi. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Tony and Doreen Giles Blasi. He was a graduate of West Scranton High School and he received his Associates Degree from Keystone College and his Bachelor Degree from The University of Scranton. He was formerly employed by the Liquor Control Board. He did all he could for his sons. He always put his loving wife and family first. Tony's four boys were his pride and his grandchildren were his joy. The family wishes to thank Regional Hospital's 7th floor and the ICU's doctors and nurses for all the care and compassion given to Tony. The family also wishes to thank their Allied Terrace family. She was employed locally by several manufacturing companies. Louise enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and watching the Gameshow Network. Surviving is her daughter and caregiver, Carol Gill, with whom she resided, a sister Edyth Mussaro, Scranton, and nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by two brothers; James J. DeStefano and Leonard G. DeStefano, an infant brother Andrew DeStefano, and two sisters; Josephine Hanis and Adeline Vullo, and a nephew Francis Mussaro. Ann L. Simerson, 91, a resident of Scranton, died Thursday at the Jewish Home Of Eastern Pa. She was the widow of the late William Simerson and the couple were married for 62 years. Born in Exeter, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Gertrude Kelly Campbell. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and she was a member of St. Peter's Cathedral. She was formerly employed as a bookkeeper for Felton's Hardware. She also worked as a seamstress creating beautiful wedding gowns and other clothing. Ann and Bill were a model couple living their lives expressing their deep love for one another. Surviving are a nephew; Michael Lahey and wife Deborah, and a niece; Nancy Rosar, and a cousin. Anne T. Schaffer, 96, a resident of Moosic, formerly of South Scranton, died Wednesday at Moses Taylor Hospital after being stricken ill at home. She was the widow of Robert H. Schaffer, who died in 2012. The couple was married for 64 years.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Ferdinand (Fred) and Theresa Cianchetti Padeletti. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church until its closure. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and she was formerly employed by Lackawanna County. She was a member of the South Scranton After 50 Club. Anne devoted her life to her daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to cook her favorite Italian dishes.
Surviving are her daughter, Sharon Volack, Moosic, with whom she resided; three grandsons, Richard Volack and wife, Chryssa, Jason Volack, and Sean Volack and wife, Shannon; twin great-granddaughters, Shyane and Madison Volack and Chloe Volack; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Italo Padeletti.
The funeral will be private for family members. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

Kenneth J. Scheller, 68, a resident of South Scranton, died Sunday evening in Geisinger CMC after a brief illness. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Raymond and Mary Monahan Scheller. He was a member of St. John Neumann Parish and he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1971. He was formerly employed by the AZEK company. He was a member of the 606 Club and he enjoyed participating in the children's Christmas parties. He was also a member of St. Mary's Club. Ken was a quiet man with a heart of gold. Surviving are a brother Raymond Scheller and wife Eleanor, Scranton, two nieces; Lauri Robinson and husband Kirk, and Lisa Visnofsky and husband Gary, great niece Emilee Robinson and great nephews Aaden Robinson and Austin Visnofsky. He was also preceded in death by his brother Donald Scheller. The funeral will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Marilyn G. Brock, 85, a South Scranton resident, died Thursday morning in Linwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of Paul M. Brock, Sr., who died in 1997. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Romaine Reif Miller. She was a member of St. Paul Of The Cross Parish and was a graduate of St. Mary's High School. She was employed for 32 years by the East Mountain branch of Wacovia Bank. During her years there, she developed close friendships with fellow employees and they formed a Bank Card Club. She also enjoyed lasting friendships with her classmates and participated for 63 years in their Card Club. She was a wonderful homemaker, loved her Sunday dinners and her grandchildren and great grandchildren lit up her life. Mary Rader Otherski

Mary Rader Otherski, just four days shy of her 96th birthday, went to join her beloved Frankie on January 4, 2021, at Mountain View Care Center where she'd been a resident since March 2019.
Born in Scranton on January 8, 1925, daughter of Philip and Bertha Thennes Rader, she was a lifelong resident of the city. She was a student at St. Mary Of The Assumption through high school graduation and a member of that parish until its closing, after which she joined St. John Neumann Parish. During WW ll, while employed at Williams Baking Company, she and a friend decided to do their part for the war effort and enlist, hoping for assignments in the nursing field. However, on the day she was to report...the war ended! She was always teased that the Germans and Japanese got word that she was coming and they raised the white flag! She returned to her job at Williams and through friends there met the love of her life, Frank Otherski, who had returned to his job at Williams after discharge from the army. They were married on February 15, 1947, and celebrated their 52nd anniversary before Frank's passing in May 1999.
Mary was everyone's friend and trusted confidante. No doubt, she has taken many a friend's secret to the grave with her long after the need for secrecy. She had a beautiful singing voice and spent many an hour in perfect harmony on the piano bench next to her son-in-law, "Greggie". She loved all music, especially the old classics, and the Lawrence Welk Show and Sing Along With Mitch were staples in the early years in her home. She loved to dance but Frank had two left feet, so it was usually limited to a "ladies" polka or jitterbug. She was a great, but basic cook, because Frank was a meat-and-potatoes man and no fan of casseroles. She was a lover of animals, big and small. Even a spider required rescue and release in Mary's house...no squishing ever! There was a parade of family cats and dogs through the years, and each and every one spent time on her lap in the rocking chair or recliner.
Surviving to celebrate her life and to mourn her deeply are her three daughters; Barbara (Greg) Laskow, Jamestown, NC, Nancy Otherski, Scranton, Marianne (Ed) Koons, Hanover Twp., grandson Jason (Michelle) and cherished great granddaughter Addison, Haymarket, VA, several nieces and nephews, and her adored and adorable ( when he's not biting) rescue cat Toby.
She was also preceded in death by her older brothers Joseph and William and older sister Ellen Rader Peters.
We, her daughters, would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of Mountain View Care & Rehabilitation Center, especially those in the Camelot/Magical Court unit, for their limitless patience and devotion to Mom's care and comfort, especially during the pandemic when their hands and faces and smiles and kind words had to take the place of ours. Words are simply inadequate to express how very much that meant to us.
A Mass Of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 AM in Nativity Of Our Lord Church, St. John Neumann Parish, 633 Orchard St., by Rev. Michael Bryant, Pastor. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery, Greenwood section. There will be no calling hours.
